I would greatly appreciate thoughts/opinions on UMich vs UNC. I'm torn on the decision - it would be much cheaper for me to attend UNC. I'm not at all sure what type of medicine I want to go into it. Are possible differences in residency match as important as they're made out to be? Any thoughts on the two schools would be really helpful. Sorry for the self-indulgent note, I really would like to hear what some people think. Thanks.

I would pick UNC in a heartbeat just because of cost factor. Also, you will find tons of research opps in both the places, and both schools have great reputation .... and both will open doors for you just because of name .... plus if you want to stay in NC for residency, you will have better chances coming from UNC (I think) ...... so the only differencce between the two, as I see it, would be the cost and since you are NC resident, UNC wins.

Just my $0.02

Thanks very much. I'm not in-state, but I've been offered a scholarship. Any other thoughts on the schools, impact on residency or in general? Thanks

If you really want to be near Michigan post-graduation, choose U Mich because you're more likely to rotate in that area. Good luck!

thanks Franklin. I'm not sure where I'll ultimately want to be. It's a difficult decision. Any thoughts from people at or going to Unc about the program? Thanks

I would say choose Michigan. The Football is much better there. Plus the waitlist will move 😉

I currently attend the UNC SOM... if you have any detailed questions PM me and i'll respond... (like what you're considering, etc.)

As far as I know, the collegiality amongst the students here are great... you have all kinds of opportunities for research, the weather is incredible, you could pursue an MPH, etc.

let me know what your parameters are and I could shed some light on UNC.

any more opinions on this decision? i know it's annoying and self-indulgent. just humor me. advice is appreciated. any current students out there who can give perspective on the schools? thanks

check your PM's

my best friend is on the waitlist at unc... you can do a HUGE favor for us and go to UMich 😛 please? 😀

I hope that you attended our 2nd look if you are faced by this decision....

If not......

Both are great places. I think the cost difference is important, then again my anatomy lab partner is from NC, and turned down UNC because he said, "you get what you pay for." His girlfriend is at UNC, and from what I've heard, Michigan is a much better place to be. I could write a book, but do a search on my username, and I'm sure you'll find all the useful comments I could ever write......I'm too tired to repeat myself....

Hi-

You can't go wrong coming to UNC (where I am finishing my third year). Besides an amazing faculty, great research opportunities, a top notch hospital, and awesome collegiality between classmates... you've got 1000 times better weather here!! (I came as an out-of-stater from Boston and don't miss winter one bit...)

Really, I couldn't be more enthusiastic about my experience so far. This is a fantastic place with a really well-rounded student body.

Take care and good luck!

Looks like you have two great choices. If you're really waffling that much between these two options, flip a coin and let us know the result (Heads for Michigan, Tails for UNC).

Dude, tough choice as these are my two top choices. With the cost issue I would probably go with UNC since NC is the greatest state in the south.

Who cares about football when you've got the best rivalry in college sports in UNC and Duke BASKETBALL?? 😀

Seriously though, UNC if I had to make the choice. Mich is great, don't get me wrong, but the low cost of UNC more than makes up for that. Yes, there is a difference in reputation, but it is small enough that you can easily overcome it with hard work.

A pretty haughty thing for him to say, don't you think? It's also likely that you are getting a colored version of the story from your partner, since he seems pretty biased against UNC. I've only heard of good things from the school, mostly from people I know there because my undergrad sends a bunch to UNC Med (so yea, my impression of UNC are not 1st hand...).

Close call... NC is probably the best southern state to live in OVERALL, but I think Georgia and maybe Tennessee both have greater highs and lower lows than NC.

Are you advocating that Michigan-Ohio State isn't the greatest Football rivalry?

And yeah, Georgia is a much better state 🙂

With UNC having an overwhelming number of instate students, who probably stay in the southeast, if you are looking for a national name, Michigan is the way to go.....the class of 2008 is expected to be 60% out of state, my class is 55% out of state. Although UNC is a good school, I'm not aware of any departments that it is outstanding in. Maybe someone can fill that in. A large chunk of our departments are in teh top 10 in the country (or so I hear from faculty).

Cerb, if you weren't a guy I'd kiss you.

Thank you for realizing the truth. 😉

2nd best ... 🙂 Va 1st 🙂

Tough call. I'd go to Michigan. To me, watching OSU v Mich in the Big House and Big 10 football destroys bball. Plus Mich is a fantastic school!

Well, we do have better football here...

GO VOLS

thanks for the advice. I've decided on UMich. I'll miss the weather.

I'll see you there, Mobley (I'll be an M1, too). If you're interested in living in a 5 BR house that's within walking distance of the med school, e-mail me at [email protected]. So far there's another M1 that will live there. Ideally, we want two grad or professional students to fill the other spots (maybe a couple of female law, business, or grad students). The rent should be reasonable (around 500 bucks a month) and utilities will be pretty cheap, considering the fact that they will be split 5 ways. The house is supposed to be super nice. E-mail me if you're interested.

UNC.....

I don't see a difference in reputation. Money is important. Also, you are 4 hrs drive away from D.C., 3.5 hrs away from Asheville..... What does Michigan have to offer during the fall and winter?

4 hour drive from Chicago. Michigan also has skiing farther north.

actually, from what I understand, VCMM was advocating that UNC-Duke was the best rivalry in college sports (not football).... and I happen to agree ( i might be a little biased here))

btw, I attend UNC and I dont know anyone who is not happy with their experience. (in other words, I haven't run across people like your "friend's" girlfriend!)

and what is UNC good in? well, as far as I know, their ENT department is one of the best in the nation (accepting around 3 residents with over 450 applicants per year)...

I think the school stands up much more to what you seem to be throwing its way... one more thing, a good number of students place in residencies in NY, Cal, and Massachusets (so the school doesnt really send all their students to the southeast)

anyway, as has been mentioned before... you can't beat the weather!!!

i had to make the same decision b/w umich and unc and i choose unc. i love umich and i love unc but i'm glad i choose unc for med school. my boyfriend goes to umich and i think we've had very comparable educations. both of us love certain parts of each school and think other parts should be different or more like the other school. it looks like you already made your decision so just don't look back and you'll be happy.
