UNC and U Penn status?

Give them a call! Programs sometimes overlook applicants who are outside a certain radius of distance with the rationale that those applicants are more likely to be those that are just interviewing for backups. Programs want to interview applicants who will rank them highly (i.e. have good reasons for wanting to be there). Applicants who call and e-mail demonstrate that their interest is genuine; they will have opportunities that those who are passive in the process will not. A great application might get read more thoroughly but there are a ton of great applications out there. Why not tip the scales in your favor and express interest, if in fact you can do so genuinely/honestly?

Oh, and maybe this goes without saying but don't be a nuisance in your contact--enthusiasm and thanks for the program of interest are always well-received though.

Emailed both programs over a week ago. ***Crickets***

Hey, there's no shame in giving them a call after the holidays. A lot of applicants start canceling interviews in January at programs that might have ended up being lower on their match list...interview fatigue and having interviewed at a sufficient number of likable programs will have that effect.
