I forgot to ask at the social the night before if any of the other applicants were on SDN. I also wanted to hear how you thought your experience went. Mine went well eventhough one of my interviewers was the assistant dean of medicine. It made me a little nervous when I met him and read his name tag. The interviews were pretty laid-back and was very conversational and not just drilling you with Q&A. Also, does anyone know when the final adcom meeting is?

I heard they are meeting in feb. and let you know by mid feb. or something some say late jan. but last time i called they said the adcom will meet in feb.

My friend who is a D1 there got accepted in the 2nd round and he got his call the first or second week of Feb...it was close to Valentine's Day. Goodluck and I hope you get in.....we can be classmates. If you don't mind me asking....who were your interviewers this past Sat?

A perio resident: Dr. Dorion, the assistant dean of admissions at UNC med: Mr. Keith, and a D4 non-traditional whose name I couldn't catch. He introduced himself very quickly in front of a loud group in Tarrson Hall, very nice guy though.

I was just seeing if you had the same set of interviewers as me. I think the group of 3's stay the same for all of the interview sessions. I had Dr. Gerdts, Dr. Roberts, and a D4 student. They were all awesome, extremely nice, and really made you feel as if you were at home there. Anyway, goodluck again and make sure you put a post up if you get an acceptance call in Feb.

tuthluver.....I too had Dr. Craig Dorion. What was your impression of him? I thought he was pretty awesome compared to some of the ones I have gotten in the past two years especially those from the prosthodotics dept. Anyone else notice this? Looks like we will be competeing vs. one another for Dr. Dorions approval for admitance, good luck.

I thought he was a very nice guy. He definitely read my file well before speaking with me. Although, I'm just not sure our personality's meshed well. It was probably my fault though for not carrying the conversation well. Don't worry about him. I'm not feeling well about getting his vote. Good Luck to you!

Does anyone know how the whole selection process works from the interviews on? Do the interviewers present their top picks to the adcoms in Feb, or what?

I might not be the most credible source since I don't know this for a fact, but I remember some current UNC students saying that at this point, the Admissions committee (and all interviewers) will hold a single meeting right before they hand out the second round of acceptances (I don't think they meet weekly like the Adcoms of some schools), and the interviewers basically have to "nominate" your file for acceptance at this meeting. I'm not sure if they actually go through each person's file in detail (hence the importance of the interview at UNC)...

Obviously your odds are much more daunting if you're an out-of-stater, but who knows at this point.

Best of luck to you. I'm still trying to make this impossible decision, but UNC is at the top of my list!

The majority of the out-of staters that I talked to at the interview seemed to be coming from Penn. I know that they meet one more time, but my question is whether an interviewer can nominate only one or can they nominate more if they see fit. I don't think it's fair if there are 2 stellar applicants that 1 should get canned, or can an interviewer refuse all 4 applicants they saw if none meet their expectations.

Another stike against me is that I'm a non-traditional junior trying to get in a year early. From everyone I talked to; I was the only one.

Tuthluver,

The last interviewer I had at UNC explained the whole process to me right at the end of our conversation. This is what he explained (atleast for the first round of acceptances):

-Right after the interview day is over, all 3 of the AdCom members that interviewed with you meet. Since all 3 of the members met with the same...lets say 5 people...they go ahead and rank you out of 10. This is worth 40% in their formula. I think DAT's are 30% and GPA is 30%. They then plug you into an excel spreadsheet with everyone else (in my case..people who interviewed in Sept, Oct, and Nov)....I guess this is somewhere in the 200 student range....give or take...the top 4 or 5 people he said basically are automatically accepted.
-Now, this is where your question comes into play. Each interviewer (again this was in Oct), gets to choose roughly 3-4 people that they want to see get accepted....they will then basically have a big discussion and fight for your admission....I am guessing after each person is introduced to the rest of the committee they have a vote on whether the person will be accepted, rejected, or waitlisted....

I do not know how it will work for this round of acceptances because I don't know whether they will re-plug in everyone from the Fall interviewers....along with this past weekend interviews...back into the spreadsheet to see who the top people are. They might though. But to answer your question, each interviewer (not sure about the student), gets basically 3 or 4 people to advocate for. You also have to remember that there are still people from the first round of interviews that your interviewer may want to bring back up again to the committee!

Wow, I didn't know it was that involved... talk about a daunting process 😱
