I will be graduating and applying in June, 2013, and I've heard some amazing things about UNC Medical School. I've heard that the school prefers students that are "artsy", and I've been playing in my school's concert band for the past three years. I am also an amateur musician on the side, and I've made some money selling my own albums. In addition, I hold mini-concerts with four of my friends, and we occasionally perform for the community and donate any proceeds to charity.

I am an out of state applicant, so I know things will be very difficult. However, I am wondering if UNC is a legitimate choice for me next year with a 3.6/3.4 and 36?

you have to be divine in order to be considered for an interview OOS, from what I know. their website is probably a good source. NC public schools are all IS heavy (ECU, UNC).

I had the same MCAT and a perfect GPA when applying to UNC. OOS. Got declined an interview. My secondaries probably weren't so hot with UNC and I am not artsy by any means, so it's hard to make comparisons. But I have heard it's very difficult to get into (much less interview) as an OOS at UNC.

i appreciate the responses. it seems very unfair though, considering that UNC is quite lenient to IS applicants. For such a highly ranked school, its stats aren't that high tbh. well, looks like i'll have to stick with the good ol' UCs....

I am a Cali resident (non-URM). looks like i'll have an uphill battle coming up. oh well.

147 IS applicants matriculated out of 880 verified IS applications. 23 OOS applicants matriculated out of 3,695 verified OOS applications. Also, they interviewed 517 IS vs 122 OOS.

From the MSAR. Chances look slim.

oh damn...this means that if you are IS applying to UNC, you have well over 50% chance for an interview. and since 147 IS applicants matriculated, it probably means MORE THAN 147 IS applicants were accepted. Say 200 accepted. This bascially means IS applicants have a 20% chance of getting into UNC...unbelievable...wow

That's really not that uncommon with state schools.

About 40% of the school went to undergrad at UNC and another 30% from either NC State or another NC campus. It's a great school. They don't tend to focus so much on stats (accounting for the relatively low averages), but I can assure you there's no secret bias towards musically-talented. They like to see public service and "patient interaction."

The in-state bias at UNC is very very strong. You have a way better chance at getting accepted to Wake Forest or even Duke here in North Carolina than you do as an OOS applicant to UNC. As an IS applicant, those chances are reversed. For OOS, im sure there are some minimum stats they're looking for but as a whole the school values other things much much more than the two main stats.
