Is the MED program really a "pipeline" program? Given a modest GPA, above average DAT scores, and good extras, can a strong performance in the MED program put you over the top?

I don't think it would put you over the top, but it does give you a competitive edge. You'll also have something to talk about during your interview, something that will leave a good impression. It really boils down to your DAT (a tiny bit more important than your GPA), your GPA, and your interview. 30% GPA, 30%DAT, and 40% interview. Good luck! I pulled this off the unc website. Hope it'll make you happier 🙂
"[FONT=Times New Roman,Times]Since 1974, eighty-eight percent of the 1,886 students who have attended the MED summer program decided to apply to health profession schools. Ninety percent gained admission, with 80% matriculating into medical or dental school, and the remainder entering other health profession schools.".
PM me if you have more questions ( I didn't see anyone answering, so I just want to give you my opinion 🙂)
I agree with you. Some of the people who got in dental school that "survived" the MED program thought dental school is easier (heard it from someone while i was tutoring at UNC). It will prepare you for dental school, but I don't know how much it will improve your application. Schools look at numbers more and more nowadays. Look on the bright side, UNC puts 40% on the interview; maybe your MED experience will help you on that 40%.
