Just curious to know if people are aware that the entire UNC SoD is gettting re-organized from the ground up. The dean (who is pretty new on the job) did not like the way the school was structured so he demoted all the department chairs and is now merging all the departments into 5 or so "mega-departments". One of them is for basic research, another for pedo-public health-ortho, another for OMFS-AEGD, one more for "diagnostic sciences" (radiology, oral path, oral medicine, orofacial pain), and the last one of everything else lumped up (endo, perio, prosth, operative, hygiene).

A lot of faculty, residents, and alumni are fuming over this since they are going to lose a lot of autonomy over how to organize their budget and run their department and the majority will end up under the thumb of some admin person who knows nothing about their specialty and runs their unit and 2-4 others at the same time. People are concerned this is going to make the quality of the school tank. Some faculty members might not stay and look for positions elsewhere.

I think it probably matters less for students applying to the DDS program but for those applying to residencies it might be a big deal. I wanted to get a feel of how much awareness there is of the current overhaul going on at UNC and whether or not it has affected your plans to apply there.

I do know that Dr. Turvey stepped down as chair of OMFS, but not sure if that is related. It's like the beginning of the end of UNC lol
