I was wondering if anyone here wouldn't mind posting their stats who got into UNC. I ask this b/c I was rejected for the 2005 cycle, and got a pretty rude response from the adcom as to how I could improve my application (i.e. application #'s are high, we dont have the time to talk to everyone who didn't get in, etc.) It would be helpful to know if I am on the cusp of getting in or really have no chance again this year. Ive seen the numbers on their website, and I seemed about average in terms of stats, though I thought maybe being a UNC undergrad would look nice/justify not having a 3.8. My Stats UNC grad 04, GPA 3.5, Sci GPA at the time 3.21 (now a 3.4 maybe higher w/ summer courses) DAT(AA/TS/PAT) 20/20/17 w/ shadowing & assisting experience.
Now I know people will criticize me for this but I'm guessing its harder to get in being a non-URM MALE, seeing how thats likely 75% of the applicant pool. Anyone like to share their stats and or offer me suggestions on if i need to improve the DAT, or Sci GPA etc. ) **one of my LOR somehow got held up until Nov/Dec-so maybe applying late is what did me in***
Again tons of questions, but seeing how the ADCOMS didnt want to answer maybe you guys wouldn't mind helping.
Thanks and best of luck to everyone.

If you want to get in UNC with those stats bad enough retake the DAT, study yourself sick and get a science score in the low 20s...I would say 22+. Otherwise you've got decently competitive stats but as you said a cauc male hurts in a way. If you are that serious about getting into UNC kill the DAT and you should stand a much better chance. I had the same background, UNC undergrad, etc but my dat was up in the 20s so that helped me in.

Did you at least get an interview? I'm assuming you did.

Did get an interview, but it was the last date, and my first interview ever, so I was definitely way more nervous than I needed to be. I think interviewing earlier in the cycle benefits most people and hopefully I'll be a lot more relaxed. I appreciate the advice on the DAT's, just hoping I can get like a 22 or 23. By the way, that was my only time taking the DAT, and ive heard UNC will combine your scores into the best possible set, any idea on how that works. (i.e. will it look bad if i get lower but still good scores on my best sections trying to really boost say my bio and pat sections).
Thanks a bunch,
HEELS all the way!

Application wasn't complete until November (had a hold up getting my LOR from the dentist I shadowed. Interviewed in January (last date). Graduated from competitive private university, GPA 3.2 (bad first year, then marked improvement), Science gpa 3.5 (4.0 in 3 post grad semesters), DAT AA 21, PAT 17. Primary on granted research project on microbiology. 60+hours shadowing, leader in volunteer work project, business owner, NC resident, white dude. It was my first interview too, but I think it went well - I was well prepped about a lot of current issues pertinent to NC dentistry and let them know it. I think it's also important to express what makes you unique, and what you could offer the class that someone else couldn't. I tried to keep that in mind during the entire process (essays, interviews). Good Luck! Your stats are great - you just might need to find out what can seperate you from the herd.
I don't know if they combine DAT scores or not - that's the first I've heard of that. I didn't take it, but many people on the forum seem to have had good results with the Kaplan course (I'm assuming you didn't take it the first time around). Even if you don't decide to go through that again, the fact that your gpa will be even higher this time around, you're applying earlier (all the schools I interviewed at told me that this greatly increases your chances), and you'll show your dedication by re-applying, you should be a strong candidate. But do take my previous advice, and work whatever angle you can that makes you different.

I just got back from the parents orientation yesterday... the dean was spitting out the stats of CH and of the new incoming class. He stated that this year was one of the most competitive years. The average science GPA was a 3.6 and the average DAT was 20.5 for AA. Research is huge if you can get involved.

Wow! What a jump! Isn't that science gpa higher than last year's UNC MD class? It looks like the times, they are a changin'.

The interview at UNC is EXTREMELY important. Selection works like this: If you're in the top x% (can't remember the number off the top of my head) of the formula-based scorers (40% interview, 30%DAT, 30% GPA) you're automatically in. The remainder of the spots are filled by nominations. In other words, one of the admissions committee has to nominate you for consideration and then your application is discussed and considered.
In any case, the interview (and unfortunately WHO you interview with) is pretty important. Make the best impression you can, emphesize your unique points, and follow up so that your name/face is remembered.

How was the orientation? Were alot of students there? I didnt get to make it because I had alot of things here I had to get done. It would have been nice to meet my future classmates. Anyway, see you in August I guess.

Parents orientation was pretty nice, they had a guest speaker, actually more of a motivational speaker that made everyone really pumped up about going to school there and dentistry in general. Couldn't really say how many kids there were b/c parents were there too, i'd say around 20~25 maybe. Fire alarm went off in the middle of the speaker for about 20 minutes, but other than that, it was a great experience. see you in August...

My buddy got accepted to UNC this cycle...he had a 4.0 from Duke, double majored, and got a 16/16 on his DAT ( I dont think he studied a single second).

WAY TO GO HEELS
