UNC vs ECU

I am in the privileged situation to have been accepted to UNC and ECU. I was accepted to ECU in December and was just accepted to UNC earlier this evening. I never really thought that I would actually get into UNC so now I have a difficult decision to make. Anyone who has been in this position before, what school did you choose and why did you make your decision? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone

Im from NC and interviewed at both, however only accepted at UNC. I think it's based on what your looking for in a dental school. If you plan on working in underserved areas, ECU may be for you. I doubt you could go wrong with either.

Without knowing much about those schools, I'd say go to UNC. They have an insane track record and are highly regarded in the field of dentistry. Meaning, a lot of substantial research and publications come from there. I'm sure they're adept clinically as well.

UNC. Its well established. ECU hasn't graduated it's first class yet I believe.

Congrats on getting in today, I unfortunately did not receive an interview with UNC but did with ECU. Good luck with your decision, I bet its not an easy one!

I have patients in clinic that drive past Greenville, NC (where ECU is located) and are from Greenville who come to see me for dental care. When I ask them if they would want to transfer to ECU to save travel time they say, and I am pretty much quoting here: "Why would I go there would I could come to UNC?"

Costs are pretty much the same, but UNC has the national name, amazing faculty and the location is better. This should be a no brainer...if you want to work rural you can still do that with a UNC degree...

I went to UNC for undergrad and grew up in Greenville. I'm not going to go on about my personal preferences, but there are stark differences in population density, population makeup, entertainment opportunities, and educational experiences (traditional vs. PBL, etc) that you should consider.

After interviewing at both places, I would think you would have a good idea of where you prefer to be by now.

If you haven't done much by now, I'd highly recommend talking to students from both programs as they will give you insight into the differences between the education/atmosphere between both schools.

If you have any questions about either location, I would be more than willing to expand.

How much PBL does ECU use in its curriculum? Just curious.

Disclaimer: I am a prospective dental student, not a current student.

From the ECU student I've talked to, the main PBL comes from the case studies assigned each week. There is still plenty of lecture & lab (I've been quoted~36 hrs/week) but the format of classes and exams is different from UNC. For example, ECU has weekly exams that cover material from every class whereas UNC has individual exams for each course and each exam weighs more.

I currently go to UNC for undergrad, but I am attending dental school back in my home state. I would go to UNC hands down over ECU, and a large majority of my pre-dental friends here would say the same

If anyone is still considering both, send me a PM. I interviewed at both and barring a full ride offer from UNC, I will be attending ECU. I have experiences at both universities and locations and can answer general questions if you are really having trouble deciding.
