I've gotten accepted to both schools and now I'm having a tough time deciding. Both are great schools and are highly regarded. Maryland will have a new facility opening next year. Assuming money is not an issue, do you have any thoughts about the schools? Thanks!

Things to consider.

Maryland: Wanna come and join Dukie's archirival?
FYI, Duke got their rear raped on 1/26 by the Terrapins.

UNC: Heard Tar Heels like to rape Dukies as well.

Good luck.

Maryland and Duke archrivals? Hmmmmm, shouldn't it be UNC and Duke are archrivals?

Man. you are lucky. I didnt get in anywhere. I would pick Maryland because I have been there and by far its one of the most fun and exciting places I have been to (no offense to other cities). Also, they do have a brand new dental facility. You really cant go wrong with either schools but in my opinion Baltimore is a more exciting city to live in after living in NC my whole life. I would gladly take your spot there if I could. Good luck deciding. At least you have a choice.

Thanks for the advice. I hope it works out for you. Good luck!

Go UNC man. I loved UNC. Wasn't too impressed with Maryland afterward (don't get me wrong, it just paled in comparison). Around here UNC is the coveted school.

What did you like so much about UNC or not so much about Maryland?

It is common knowledge that UNC is one of the very top programs in the nation. They have tons of research money and tuition is relatively cheap. I like that you start clinical experience within the first year, the facilities are great, patient base good, location nice. They have a very strong program with enthusiastic students and faculty. It is the closest in philosophy to Iowa, which I also loved. They seem to crank out very well educated and experienced students. Also, I did some shadowing with Gordon Christensen's son and he seemed to think UNC was about the best you could go.

On the other hand, I had pretty well decided I liked UNC so Maryland was no big excitement. They are getting a new school! I just wasn't as impressed with how they sold their program. I am looking to get straight into a GP out of school and a huge number of Maryland students do GPRs. Wondered if that was because they didn't feel prepared? Anyway, cost of living, tuition, etc. Both great schools. Being from NC you probably aren't as excited about your state school as the rest of us. I don't think you could go wrong with either. But, if you could pay less to get to a stronger program. . .go for it. Also, the strong research background gives many opportunities for funding, grants, etc.

unfortunately, I did not apply in time for consideration to unc, i would of loved to have checked it out.

About maryland, I got the opposite feeling in terms of how prepared clinically the students were.

I also want to go into gp right after and i think a lot has to do with how much time the student devotes to the whole experience. Which school you go to does matter. Its tough to judge schools, especially since we live far a way from most. For example, I live in jersey and UMDNJ has an awesome clinical aspect.

The best feedback I recieved was contacting directors of residency programs. I simply ask them which kids, from what schools are the most competent, etc...

My father was a dentist and helped out with students in clinics for a long time. From this area, buffalo umdnj and maryland as a whole have always turned out kids with solid skills.

this is just my two cents, but definitely contact the people that run residnecy programs, I found them to be very open and after speaking to a few, i found the same schools coming up, and MD is one of them.

good luck!

When I visited Maryland, I liked how the deans listened to the students and made things happen for them.

- No classes during your senior year.
(I know for sure, Buffalo students have classes in their senior year.)
- Plenty time to prepare for the board.
- Big on clinical.
- New facility.

How did you see this? I also think the way MD structures their classes is a nice thing. It allows for time to apply to specialty programs without missing lots of class.

also...when you visit, or if you have already, think about the number of patients you saw in the clinics(and find out the number they get per year.

maryland, every clinic was packed, the wiating rooms, etc...i mean packed.

pitt for example, it was empty, i mean if you have a group of students coming a particular day for an interview, you think they would make sure the clinics were full.

maybe it was an off day, but it left a bad taste in my mouth, and i will not attend there.

personally, i was very impressed with md (as you know) even to the point where i am strongly considering it over umdnj (my home state)....to me i am thinking its worth the extra in tuition. plus, who knows, i may be able to get insate after a year.

I personally would pick the school that is closest to my family because that makes a world of difference. North carolina and maryland are both great places to live but I think it is easier to have the family support. Maryland does have a new building so that is an added plus. I know it is a tough decision so I hope our advice helps. Good luck

I agree with ranark
First of all, Maryland is a great school. I have some friends that go there and they are very happy with the teachers and curriculum. Since you will be close to your family it would really be a plus. It doesn't sound that appealing now but it is in fact very convenient. Family support is very important especially when you are in dental school. It's nice to be close. You will be attending a great school as well. I got into schools at home like UCLA and USC but got offers at Penn and UCSF...But when I think about, it's not worth the move when I have such great schools at home. Good luck

Anybody know the GPA range of the class for Maryland? Is it one of those schools where everyone is trying to specialize, so its real cut throat?

2004 Class Data:

Applicants: 1630 (Residents: 153 & Non-Residents: 1477)
Enrollees: 112 (Residents: 64 & Non-Residents: 48)
*A lot of mormons come here for some reason. 10 of 48 are from Utah.

GPA Overall: 3.46
GPA Science: 3.40

DAT (AA): 19.55
DAT (PA): 17.24
DAT (TS): 19.31

Tuition:
Res: $15,482
Non-Res: $32,320

I know this for sure, if you are from out of state, you have to have at least 3.2 GPA (I would assume this to be science) and 19 on DAT.

Hope this helps.

Research is not required here and 16-19% go into specializing.

Since I'm in UNC right now and know some dental students, I heard about UNC dental school a lot. Since it's a state school located in the relatively quiet state, NC, you can picture how the school life would be down there.

Although UNC dental school is not well-known to people in the Northern states, students there look very happy. It has a nice program considering its extremely cheap tuition.

However, Maryland sounds more fun and exciting because you've been staying at Durham for the undergrad school. I personally prefer a big city, so didn't apply to UNC. Both schools are nice and similar, so you wouldn't regret whether you wind up going to. Good luck on your decision :luck:

Haha, that's a good offer. I did just get in to Columbia, so that is now another option. Any thoughts there vs. the others?

My sister lives in Cockeysville which is 20 mn away from Baltimore.. She loves it in Maryland. She is the one who pushed me to apply to dental school there which I did although I didnt get in. I visited the school a few times when I was visiting my sister and I loved it too. I am going to reapply to UMaryland next year because I really want to go there. The new facilities and amt of patients are great and the faculty are extremely nice. Maybe I will see you there next year. 👍

bump

any new thoughts? I'm still trying to make the decision.

Put your fate in the hands of the gods. If UNC wins on Sunday, go there! P.S. see you in August
