So they apparently have a 2-year cycle now, as of their December review. Disappointing to me because I enjoyed the day there as well as the people. To their credit, they seemed very candid and open about what the problems were/are and how they have already fixed them or are working on fixing them. Thoughts on what this means? Any perspectives from current UNC students, residents?

They are in a chair search which I think is accounting for the 2 year cycle. I would not be too worried - they have a strong internal candidate and have been interviewing some great outside candidates.

Current resident. While there are a few things on the list of fix-its, I think the chair search played a large part in the short period. Some of the things on the list were pretty dumb, two were worth looking into and one is already addressed. Mayer and Norfleet have been very open and proactive, and I think overall it will actually help them make improvements that could have taken longer if this impetus wasn't there. I'd still come here again, the quality of the education and the awesomeness of the peeps aren't in question at all. It certainly doesn't indicate the "practically on probation!!!" status that someone in another thread said the 2 year cycle indicated. But then again, it's SDN, and numbers mean everything...

I'm not even a resident at UNC, and I'm happy at my current program.

UNC's got a great group of folks up there. A strong program by many, many accounts. They'll get through this without problem.

You're probably right...any program undergoing a change in leadership (or at least change in chair) gets a 2-year cycle maximum. This was told to me by the PD at UIC in Chicago, which is in a 2-year cycle for that same reason.
