Honestly, even if you weren't an underrepresented minority, I think you are okay. I think a 17 is about average on the DAT (for all applicants, not just you crazy SDNers) and so your DAT score is really great. You have definitely improved your grades and that shows something.
Well, here's a story:
Kathy Candito went to our school to talk about UoP. She basically said that there are some people who do badly at some point in their undergrad. She spoke about a situation in which a student did so badly in his undergrad that there was no way he could get above a 3.0 even if he got straight a's for the next 2 years or whatever... even though his GPA didn't start off on a high note, he took some more classes, got a's on those, showed improvement, and got into UOP. I think schools will understand that once you get a couple of bad grades, it is pretty hard to really boost your GPA, so they definitely look at how you've been doing in your recent classes.
End of story.
Anyway, keep up the good work. And URM or not, I think you're doing what's best for you... and the dental schools will see that.
