hey guys,
so I got an underage citation last night from the public safety (the want-to-be cops that walk around campus). I was just wandering if anyone had an idea how and if this will affect my chances of getting into dent school? I'm 19 and it was my first time and I was extremely cooperative. Will it even show up at all because its just through the school and not through the police? if anyone can tell me from personal experience that would be huge.
thanks

if you are charged in front of a judge it could. campus cops are real cops (if they are carrying guns). citations they issue to you are the same one issued by any other city/country cop.

if you don't have to show up to court to be tried, then you might be ok. on the citation, under offense, does it have the state letters and a bunch of numbers after it? (these tell you what law you broke under your states law/ordinance code) if so, then you could have some problems - not getting into school, just the fact that you ARE going to have to put that on your application in the future.

hopefully you just broke some school code and that just goes on your school record, not official police record.

I've never had any citations issued to me through a campus police system, but have had PLENTY of friends go through it. PM me if you have any specific ?'s

I hope Loma Linda wasn't your first choice.

im not sure how much it'll affect you during application process but it's definately going to affect in a negative way.

if it was given by a cop (since security guards cannot give you a citation) and you have to appear at the court, i would suggest hiring a lawyer and get the case dismissed

well they told me its definitely not a police record but only a school record. They said its a summary offense which doesn't even count as a misdemeanor. So i dont even think it would appear on a background check unless i had multiple offenses...but, i'm really not sure.

The head of admissions at our school said that they will look at everything you do, even jaywalking.

just to be safe, before you apply request an official transcript from your school and look at it yourself.

only record that will be sent from your school to dental schools is your school transcript and i believe they shouldn't include school citation on it but it won't hurt to try

as long as it's not a police report, i think you should be fine

If it is not a misdeamonor offense, it will not appear on your background check. Perhaps it will be in your school file and that you have to know through your school. A citation is like a warning, they have it on file just in chase you do something again, but is not something charged against you. Maybe the school police keep it on file for a certain amount of time, like 6 months, etc, then its tossed out. Check with your school police, think of a good excuse just in case, then take it from there. So check your file to see if it appears there, contact school police to find out how long it stays on file.

Worse case scenario, hire a lawyer, get the case dismissed, nothing that cant be cleared up.

PS: Don't apply to Loma Linda, that was funny  (one of their secondary questions is what alcohol drug related "experiences" you have)

This is a perfect examples to the underage drinkers of what can (and ultimately will happen). There was a guy a month earlier about a DUI charge, etc. and had same questions. Granted this is on a smaller scale, but be considerate. I hope that beer was worth your college investment 😀

Honestly, don't get busted again. Grow up and show that to the adcoms. As is well.!

Assuming the schools you apply to finds out about it, so friggin what? You were drinking while you were under the age of 21. Big friggin' whoop. Like 95% of America does that. Probably 100% of the admissions committee did some underaged drinking, and considering their ages, they probably chain smoked some pot during the 70's. It's not a big deal.

Honestly I totally agree-- and there is a section on the Personal Background for AADSAS where you have to admit if you have been in any sort of reprimand/probation/disciplinary trouble with your school.. and it says explicitly in the directions that telling the truth is important and many schools will look past it if you explain how you learned from the experience. Underage drinking is really common and if this is your only mishap, you should be fine. It is a lot less big of a deal than if it was something for academic honesty or something like that. Just be careful!

All these people scolding you for drinking underage are probably full of it- I really don't know anyone in college who DIDN'T drink before they were 21.

This is why I'm stoked on living where the drinking age is 19. I don't know how you guys handle it being 21...

You can have the opinion that drinking is great and wonderful and a normal part of everyone's life but believe it or not, there are some that not only think it's idiotic, but believe that there are more important things to do with one's time.

You should chill out. Enjoy a Jose Cuervo.

Good Lawd... I thought nearly everyone and their brother got one of these in the college dorms. It hasn't prevented anyone I know from doing anything. I really don't think it will prevent you from getting into dental school 😉 Don't sweat it... I'm not condoning the behavior, but I seriously doubt most people actually wait until they are 21 to drink. I'd view it as a non-issue if I were in your situation.

You can always check with your school to be certain if you are that concerned.

Cheers!! This is a toast for everyone in here, wishin ya'll good luck, come to vegas, we all get trashed!!:soexcited:

Ultimately will happen? Wow... thats presumptuous. 👎
Since we can't all be like this guy, who always acts grown up and thinks that drinking beer negates ones entire college investment, I'd say don't sweat it UofS. Man, college kids who actually waited until they were 21 to drink are few and far between...and I'm betting Adcoms realize that. Keep your grades up, ace the DAT and drink as much beer as you can during your undergrad.... I'm thinking there won't be as much time for that in dental school.

So I heard this story of a guy, with two underage citations: he didn't get an interview. But I don't know his gpa or DAT.
A story I heard. Supposedly, the citations played a big factor in the rejection.

I wrote that i drank in college. still got an interview to Loma linda..

my friend have gotten plenty of drinking citations and i you want them expunged, be prepared to spend tons of money.

apparently i need to grow up...

I was told by a police officer that an underage drinking citation is the same severity as a traffic citation that you would get for speeding. Therefore, it is no big deal and there is nowhere on AADSAS that asks you to tell them about these types of citations.

you're screwed, you have no chance getting in now.

LOL... I don't think I would actually write you drink in your application as though it is something to brag about. I'd keep that to myself and/or my friends if they happened to be with me.

They are all still virgins lol. Please who hasnt had a drink or two or ten....lol in college. Its part of the experience. As to getting busted now thats a different story lol. No one is going to care that you got busted drinking, its so commonplace, and the adcoms all went through School and they did the same thing. If it comes up, they will probably laugh about it with you. Drinking is part of college and there is no way it will hurt you.

ok seriously I don't know whats wrong with some people here, the guy just got a citation for underage drinking! its not DUI and he wasn't selling drugs... its really not a big deal you can mention it or not. If it doesn't appear anywhere don't mention it cause its not worth explaining how much you "have matured" after this experience and that you were wrong.... cause really you didn't do anything bad...
enjoy life and get a drink! I know I will after work!

I hope Loma Linda wasn't your first choice.

Or Marquette... They suspended a dental student for writing that he likes to binge drink in his personal blog lol.

Might want to cross Creighton off the list too.. and Detroit Mercy..

I'm 19 and it was my first time and I was extremely cooperative.

should I make a joke, based on The Office? nah, I won't.

You'll be fine. Just be truthful about it.

Drinking is part of college and there is no way it will hurt you.

Okay, tell that to the parents of kids who have died of alcohol poisoning at colleges across the nation... or to the families of people killed by drunk drivers.

I was doing my best to stay out of this conversation, but seriously, people, this kind of thing can have dire consequences, but nobody seems to think it will happen to them.

(Haha oh sweet, this was my 100th post.)

well, i almost thought this was a serious rant....
(Haha oh sweet, this was my 100th post.)

drinking and driving is not cool...period...but yet that has nothing to do with the topic at hand. if you are going to try and make the OP feel bad please make sure that you can stay on topic. The OP is asking about drinking at their dorm/apt with no mention of driving anywhere.

ok, to the OP...drinking and driving is stupid...(lost a good friend of mine to a motorcycle accident - alcohol related) ... but getting a minor citation for having a drink while chillin hangin out is no crime..

have fun and chill out....lata!

For real, the only thing is you have to be smart about it if you are underage. I know I ran from campus police a few times to avoid the OPs situation. But under no circumstance did I ever drink and drive.

I don't know how much adcoms care about this kind of petty incident, especially since you are 19, you are still a freshman, and therefore they kinda expect you to do stupid stuff. For future reference don't get caught next time, and don't do anything really stupid like driving drunk.

And once you get to dental school, they (the adcoms) will tell you to go out and enjoy yourself on the weekends. At least they did at my school, and they always joke about how much we drink, so honestly I wouldn't worry about it unless you are going to a religious school.

You could at least put blame where blame is due. Alcohol is a colorless, tasteless liquid at room temperature which doesn't have intentions, thoughts or a mind of it's own. In each case of someone dying of alcohol poisoning, or killing a family, there was a decision made by that person to abuse a substance.

I did that everyday of the week for 4 years... I'm screwed. LOL

LMAO, I probably spent a good 4 or 5 seconds just now trying to pick the bug off my computer, before wondering how it was underneath the screen in the first place. Good avatar haha
