So I'm about to start my 2nd year at UCSD and because of AP credits coming in, I'm only gonna have about 5 classes left over for my junior year if I take the same courseload as most of my peers. So I decided that I'm just going to grind for those 5 extra classes over next summer (2019) too, and end up graduating by the end of my 2nd year. The biggest problem is I have no idea what I would do afterwards considering that even if I did take my MCAT and apply to med school, I would still have summer classes at UCSD in August. So basically I'm gonna have an extra year between when I finish undergrad and start med school and I have no idea what to do in that gap. Sorry for the hella long post but I thought that context was necessary lol.

Chances are you'll need to buff up your ECs, having been on campus such a short time. What you should do, depends on where you think you are lacking. If you think you already have a well-rounded application, then get any job, but continue to volunteer during the application year.

If it were me, and if I had already taken the MCAT by the end of my second spring semester.

Summer after second year: www.ecela.com. Apply toedical school semifluent in Spanish +/- a Spanish minor

3rdd year fall: finish your degree, interview, graduate

3rd year spring: www.nols.edu

Not a good plan for those on a tight budget, though

I’m graduating in 2.5, mostly just cuz I didnt wanna take summer classes, so that also means I’m applying after sophomore year. I’d say unless you have ECs that have spanned several years, very high GPA, stellar MCAT, AND most importantly, feel mentally prepared and emotionally mature enough for medical school, don’t rush and try to apply for straight admission post undergrad.

Definitely take the gap year, and then apply. You’ll still have shaved off an entire year of the process. Focus on maintaining a 4.0, and getting a 520+ on the MCAT. I think its vital that as traditional applicants, what we lack in experience, we must make up for in potential (high stats).

Theres a bunch of talk by the adcoms on SDN that most of the 19-20 year old applicants they see just arent ready for medical school. I’m currently applying/interviewing so lets see how it plays out. You can check out my MDapplicant profile to follow along or PM me about any questions about my experience and I’d be happy to answer.
