I have wanted to be a physician ever since I can remember. Due to life, I haven't been able to pursue that until now, later in life. Anyway, because of a host of different reasons, the biggest being lack of confidence, I started thinking about just doing a BSN and being done. I will graduate with an associate's in applied science from my local community college this summer. Because of my back and forth of what I wanted to do in the future, I applied to both a nursing school/BSN program and a 4 year university BA in Chemistry program. Well..I got accepted to both for this fall! My question is, if MD is the goal which would be better? The Chem degree will take me 3 years and BSN will take 2. Should I just go for the Chem degree? I really like Chem btw. Or would I be better to do the BSN, then go for a post bacc? My worry is that I won't do as well with the Chem degree grade wise. I'm pulling a 4.0 right now in community college and I know a major university Chem program is going to be much much harder. I don't worry so much with the nursing school but will that hurt more than help? Sorry this is long. I appreciate any insight or advise!!

Hi,
I'm also in a similar situation, and here are my thoughts-please, if you must burst my bubble, do so gently, because I NEED to believe these things 🙂
Don't hesitate because you think the road is hard. If you enjoy Chem and are doing well in your current coursework, I think you'll do just just fine. Don't be afraid of the challenge.
I'm sorry to see you say you've been lacking the confidence to go forward in pursuing your dream. Just go for it. The confidence will come when you see how capable you are!

Sorry I can't give you too much insight because I am in a similar position, but I am cheering you on!

Does the BSN program allow you to take a bit longer to also take all the med school pre-reqs? If not I think my preference would be the Chemistry degree, but I totally understand the what-if indecisiveness making it difficult!

It sounds like you'll take 3 years regardless what with the post bacc after bsn. In that case chem makes more sense since it will offer a more appropriate intro to medicine. Bsn to md is certainly doable and i had classmates who went that route, but not straight through. Usually in my experience bsn is the original goal and the md part comes later. In my opinion, given the inherent differences between nursing and physician points of you, I'd go with chemistry.
