Hey everybody, i am still a freshmen in exercise science and i have a few questions regarding recommendation letters in applying to PT school. Currently, I am working at an outpatient PT clinic and i was wondering if i asked the PT for a recommendation letter, will the letter go to me? Sorry, i am a bit confused about how the whole recommendation letter works. Thank you!!

Hi! You'll get the recommendation when you are ready to apply for PT school. There is an application system called PTCAS that your recommendation letters will get submitted to. Most programs use PTCAS, but there are some that don't. The ones that don't you'll have your references mail their letters directly to the program. You can ask them now if in the future when you apply can they write a letter for you. I hope this helps!

So it is too early to get written recommendation letters? Ideally how many letters should i ask for? I'm still very new to the whole process.
Thank you, ptlover!

Yes its too early because you are a freshman in college and won't be applying for at least another 3 years. It's wonderful that you are so mindful of this now though. If you keep building relationships with physical therapists and professors you'll have extremely strong letters of recommendation when you are ready to apply. Ideally you want between 2-4 letters of recommendation depending on the program. I encourage you to look at ptcas.org under program lists and look at what programs require. Its great to look early! Don't overwhelm yourself though, you still have lots of time. Concentrate on getting good grades in your prerequisites and you'll be golden!
