Hey all,

Tomorrow morning in between classes I am meeting with a professor to discuss scheduling times that I can volunteer in the lab. I don't think this is an "interview" per say, just a meeting to smooth over the details. I was just thinking of stopping by after class in regular clothes (gym shorts and short sleeve t-shirts). I have 5 classes in a row tomorrow with no time to stop by my dorm and change, and it's also supposed to be 90+ outside so wearing anything to casual would be uncomfortable.

Anyways, do you think it would be appropriate to just go in regular clothing or should I suck it up and put on more formal clothing?

Regular clothing is fine.

I think a nice polo and some decent (non-gym) shorts should be fine. But it wouldn't hurt to wear a pair of pants, or even jeans.

And, Why do you have a periodic table as an avatar??

please have some more respect than showing up in gym clothes. no, you don't have to wear a suit, but some decent pants (jeans or khaki) and a long sleeve or a polo shirt is much better than gym clothes. please realize we get tons of people wanting to volunteer in labs, and half the time our investment in training you is not returned since you leave the lab in a couple weeks after realizing you don't enjoy research.

Wear whatever you would normally be able to wear in the lab. That way they can show you around, if they choose to, without making comments about your footwear. If the sort of lab you're volunteering in even cares. We can't wear sandals in any of our labs, and in some of them we can't wear shorts. When I first met my research professor I think I wore jeans and a t-shirt, she didn't seem at all surprised.

LOL whats with the people who seem unable to function in society without asking SDN what to do first? Its like "I have a date tomorrow, and the girl is premed, so should I wear my red power boxers or go with the more conservative black ones?!?!?!?!"

If your going to make a condescending comment at least make it funny.

This is my first interview for this type of position and I was confused on what type of clothing to wear. I do not make the connection with my comment and "not being able to function in society".

As for my avatar I have no idea why it is a perioidic table. I thought it was "scientific" and maybe you guys would accept me and like me more if I used an avatar you understood because I am not able to function in society. I do not like the periodic table nor do I even like chemistry all that much. I am sorry if my avatar offended you. I will change it.

When i went to talk to professors about research, i just went in whatever I was wearing to school that day. Usually shorts or pants and tshirts. I dont think it will matter.

I was in the same situation in undergrad as well. Definitely don't show up in a suit or anything, but I'd probably wear some khaki's and a polo or something with non-tennis shoes. You don't want to look overdressed, because its not a professional job I'm guessing (if its an undergrad research position), but at the same time you don't want to look like a slob haha. Good luck!

Regular clothing is fine.

one step above normal clothing is fine. You don't really want to show up with holes in your genes and a shirt with a stain from your last puke fest from drinking too much.

No kidding. What type of clothes do you wear to a medical school interivew? Hmmm, it if is winter, a dress sweater, dress pants, a tie, a good jacket (make sure it is clean), and dress shoes, or pajamas. You make the pick.

I can understand questions about if something goes together. That I can respect.

when I went to "interview" for research, my PI was wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt and was sweating from his morning run. I went in in a collared shirt and jeans.

i wore khakis and a dress shirt to my research interview and I definitely felt over dressed. pants + polo seem good enough to me

I'm from miami and I don't complain ab the heat or go with the gym clothes. Wear a polo shirt, cargo shorts or jeans and sneakers or street shoes. t-shirts with gym shorts and flip flops are a no no. You dont want to give the professor the impression that on your priority list, research in his lab comes after gym workouts.

you gotta make the team before you can wear the uniform.

wonder what kind of mutation that would be

on a more serious note...shorts are disrespectful....wear some sort of pants and some sort of decent shirt, preferably with a collar, and non-sneakers... you can look like a slob later but first impressions are important
