undergrad subjects needed 4 MCAT

Hey everyone,

Is there anyone out there who is a non-science major? If so, are you planning on doing any extra subjects such as immunology or microbiology to prepare for MCAT? Also, do you think that adding these subjects will make us non-science majors 'more competitive and appealing' to med sch admissions?

Hi i'm a non-science major and I only took the pre-med pre-reqs - Chem, orgo, physics, and biology, but I only took the first semester of biology before my mcat. I got a 31. I don't know if other science courses would have helped, but it is possible to do ok w/out them if you study.

What MCAT bio study guide did you use to prepare for the MCAT? Did you take a Kaplan course? I am also a non-science major

Appreantly, it helps a lot to just take Biochem and Anat&Physiology

I was a non science major and the only upper level courses I took was Cell Bio and Genetics. Neither really helped with MCAT.. I scored well too.

I used TPR and Examkrackers. I thought EK was great

I had anatomy in highschool and I had a really really good teacher somehow i remembered most of that stuff which helped a ton with studying bio. I got the kaplan online science review. I didn't really need help with verbal reasoning (I read a ton and that verbal reasoning stuff has always been my highest scores on standardized testing). I would have liked to take a full kaplan course but I pretty much started studying at the beginning of may and took the exam on may 22, so i couldn't fit one in. (it seems like i didn't study for a long time, but I studied pretty much 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week from the time my exams were done till I took the mcat).

afaik u basically ned teh general medical school class requirements for teh MCAT (physics, inorganic chem, organic chem, biology) Genetics, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry r all helpful, but none r necessary

I was a non-science major and I scored 40+ without taking anything beyond the basic requirements plus calculus. I did not do extra study of anything beyond what was covered in my classes, although I did take a Kaplan course (which I don't think was very useful except for the practice tests.) So I would definitely say that all the content you need is in the basic prereqs. I would schedule the MCAT for ASAP after you finish the prereqs so the material is fresh - I think that's probably more effective than taking anatomy, biochem, etc and forgetting the basic stuff in the meantime.
