I am trying to take courses that'll help prepare me for medical school and I have four potential courses that I may take that I feel are likely the best.

Histology
Human Physiology
Neurobiology I
Cellular Basis of Animal Behavior
Developmental Embryology

I wish Immunology was offered because I have heard that would be very helpful, but unfortunately it is not

Human physiology would be most useful, in my opinion

Those would all be pretty helpful. Since you can only take two of them, though, I'd recommend Human Physiology and Histology. Physiology is a very important subject in medicine - in order to truly understand the pathologies, you need to know the proper function first, aka physiology. Physiology is worth knowing cold, in my opinion.

Histology will be useful in that it is one of those memorization-heavy classes. This will take some burden off (if not a lot, depending on how in-depth you guys go) during med school itself.

However, whichever courses you decide to take, they will only be helpful if you truly master the subjects now and are able to retain the information well. I wish I had though of focusing on retaining a lot of the minutiae of subjects such as biochemistry, genetics and cellular and molecular biology when i was in undergrad.

Thanks for the input. I have been told that histology is basically a set of purple circles with black dots and it's hard for most that haven't had proper practice with it. I am trying to avoid something like that. Human physiology seemed obvious, but it looks like histology is likely the second course.

How about anatomy? If you've taken it already, great, and if it's not offered, so be it, but as an MS1 that's one class I really wish I had taken.

I took a 2 semester Anatomy and Physiology course, but I am sure that's not intense enough. I also took that a while ago and couldn't tell you a single insertion, which is probably very bad.

The classes that I listed are really the only things offered. I am looking into BMS classes to see if I can find others. I have been told Pharmacology, Physiology II (Renal, Respiratory, Hemo, Acid/Base), and Immunology can be offered through the program. It's now just a matter if I can take it.

No no no. Forget all those courses. Take the easiest possible courses to raise your GPA so that you can get into the best possible school (ie a mid-top tier MD school).

Im not even kidding. You should be concerned with achieving the highest possible GPA to improve your chances of getting into an MD school so that you dont have to deal with the non-sense we have to deal in DO school. Unless of course you really love OMM, plan on practicing primary care, or will not leave your state which only has a DO school (i dont even know if this exists anywhere)

I have already applied and got into KCUMB. I have a 27 MCAT so it is unlikely that I will get into an MD program. I am hoping to get into my in-state osteo, MSUCOM, and just want to be as best prepared as I can for any school, osteo or allo. While I would not mind completing the UofM MS in Physio because it would help with my foundation, I do not think I could fathom the addition debt that I will procure over the next few years.

I would focus on bringing up your GPA, need be.

Courses: Anatomy & Physiology AP, Microbiology, Pharm, General Bio(which is very similar to micro), some courses with fast-paced critical thinking skills will help you.

I have already applied and will hopefully be getting into the COM school of choice in the coming months. I am just thinking of courses to prep myself with one semester left before I start the my respective school.

I have already taken those, but Pharm is something I am looking into

I'd concur with taking physiology, but would encourage you to try and take immunology thru BMS if you can as opposed to histology or another course that it more memorization heavy (ie not pharm either).

In my experience, courses that were memorization heavy dont stick too well for the long term, whereas courses that deal with understanding or connecting concepts (ie physiology and immunology) stuck quite well for me, making them somewhat easier in med school. Also, I'd say it is useful to take immuno so you get comfortable "speaking the language" of immunology. good luck

Sounds solid. 👍 Thats what I would do.

I would just prep with a few classes. Phys will help, anatomy is a good one to have a base for. But yeah I would just take a few classes...

Physio but if ur in who cares. Def don't do histo u will prob literally learn ur entire college histo class in 1-2 weeks at the beginning of med school that class went fast and hard from the beginning i remember and any previous experience someone may have had didn't matter. A friend of mine had some type of background with a lot of histology (i think an ms in something?) and i actually scored better than her overall in the class, she said her previous knowledge dropped out fast. Physio will always help because its more understanding less memorization but like posters above me say, just chill u won't b behind at all.

Awesome, I will take all this into consideration as I sign up for the last semester in a few weeks. I have taken plenty of physiology courses, but none as rigorous as the upcoming BMS level physiology II, which I expect will be a little more in-depth than some medical school courses. I have already taken pathophysio, 2 semester of A and P, and a basic human physio (which was really too basic, but required).

Being in the midst of my MS1, I can say the ones that would likely help most are physiology, embryology, immunology, and gross anatomy (in no particular order).
