So I have been accepted to medical school (early) and will be starting in the fall of 2008. Needed some advice from med students...

I have the option of taking...either Biochemistry or Medical Microbiology.

Which one will help me the most in medical school...I understand that classes are much much more difficult in medical school with a different approach ect. But I think medical micro would definately help and biochemistry at least the concepts would.

I am taking cell and molec. along with one of the courses above...question is what will help me more?

PS

Also am taking Spanish for Med. Profession
Interested in derm, ortho, rad...need the high step score.

haha... chill out!

biochem, definitely... it's helped me so much!

Undergrad biochem was much more useful for me. My most useful advice to you, however, is that you stop worrying about matching into a competitive specialty at this stage of the game. You have no idea what kind of medical student you will be yet, so planning for derm, optho, etc. is pretty ridiculous. When you finally do start school, work hard, do your best, keep an open mind to what specialties might interest you, and see how things shake out.

^^^What he said.

Both would be good I guess, but go Biochem. Micro is a lot of low-level memorization, and it's the kind of thing I think you would learn now, and have lsot much of it by the time you see it again. Getting down the concepts/principles of biochem will probably serve you better overall, than remembering what generation cephalosporin to use on whatever bug.

haha yea...im chill right now...i have no idea how med school is going to be...but I figure if I aim high...yea I have no idea. But thanks for the advice...just wanted to make sure I got the best out of my last elective.

some schools also offer anatomy and physiology, those tend to be helpful as well. biochemistry is helpful for memorizing structures and certain reactions, aside from that, the time frame from biochem to when you take it is long enough for you to forget most of it anyway (since biochem is a plug and chug class anywyas). Anatomy and physiology (and moreso physiology) was more helpful to learn the material and not just regurgitate it for an exam.

I have taken two physiology classes, and I plan on taking anatomy before I start medical school.

Since you've already had physiology, I say go with Biochem.

Congrats on your acceptance. 🙂 Either class would be useful for medical school. But if I were you, I wouldn't take either of them. I'd take art, or music, or literature, or philosophy, or astronomy, or anything else that piques your interest and has zero relation to medicine or medical science. Once you leave college and begin medical school, you will not have the kind of time that you have now to do any of these things. You will pretty much be studying all science all of the time. So my advice to you is to round out your education as much as possible now, while you still can. 🙂
