I'm currently a first-year at Georgia Tech studying biomedical engineering. Has anyone heard of anyone else doing pre-vet with an engineering undergrad? My main concern is that biomedical engineering has a very rigorous undergraduate curriculum and unless I want to take the maximum number of classes a semester plus summer classes it will take me five years to graduate. Any thoughts?

Well when it comes down to it, do you want to be a vet or a biomedical engineer? Also, do you want to go to school 5 years or not? I know I didn't. I am majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; I am a junior in ugrad getting ready to go to vet school next year. My thoughts are that you take whatever major that deems necessary and finish all of your vet school pre-reqs ASAP so you can apply as early as possible. But that’s just me.

can you do an engineering minor instead? If you really like engineering and want that to be your major then it seems that you will have to do the full course load, 5 year program. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, 5 years isn't terrible. But why do an engineering major if you don't want to be an engineer?

Eh, I was an English major.

I think you should major in whatever you want to--I really enjoyed English classes, so I majored in it. You can get the pre-reqs done with almost any major. I actually ended up with a second major because of all those pre-reqs.

While an Animal Science major is probably helpful in vet school, I've talked to kids in vet school who said that they didn't know what they would do with an Animal Science major if they hadn't gotten into vet school...and wish they had majored in something that gave them more options...just in case 🙂

Engineering sounds like a good backup plan--and I'm sure the any engineering program at GaTech will get your application a second look by most admissions committees!

The two are not mutually exclusive. Big demand for things like orthopedics and other sorts of biomaterials, just like in human medicine. Do your prereqs and do them well, but major in what YOU want to major in.

Don't most GATech students need 5 years for any major?
