How would it look to admissions committees to see that I transferred from Emory University (ranked #17) to the University of Colorado at Denver Health Sciences Center which is a third tier school?

I’m a freshman right now and during my senior year in high school it was between these two schools though I picked Emory because it would be easier for me to transfer back to UCD if I didn’t like it there. I only went to Emory for it’s prestigious reputation and because my older sister goes there (though she’s graduating this spring) but otherwise I didn’t do much research on it nor did I go visit it before going there which was an error on my part. My GPA at Emory isn’t bad which is 3.528 though science not so much at 3.0.

I’m not going back home so I can go to an “easier” school. It’s just that I’m not happy here (which will reflect in my grades in the future I’m assuming) and I feel like UCD will accommodate my needs and wants better than Emory. I didn’t have that much college credit coming into Emory so with all the general education requirements I have to fulfill I feel like I have limited academic freedom. Since I’m on the pre-dental track (though I have considered pharmacy) and want to double major in psychology and biology I’ll have to spend at least 5 years at Emory whereas only 4 at UCD. A year difference may not seem like much but it’s important to me to graduate in 4 years.

I’ve asked various people their opinion including somebody on the dental admission committee at the University of Alabama. He said I should go ahead and transfer if that’s what I really want and that the quality of my education will be reflected in my DAT score.

I’ve taken courses at UCD before and I liked them so I don’t think there’ll be a chance that I’ll be unhappy there as well.

Wow that was quite detailed. Sorry if it was too long for some of you. I just want some input before I make this decision though I’ve already started the transfer application process.

Thanks to anyone who can help me! 🙂

Id listen to this guy. He/SHe prolly has a better idea than any of us do.

The first year at any school can be awkward, esp if you don't know many people. Atlanta has a lot to offer. It's one of the absolute best cities in the country. Do you know precisely why you don't like the school? Is it the Long Islanders? Is is the abundance of BMW/MB's?

i agree with the above. if you're a freshmen, you've only had one semester. i would give it some time. if you want to put in the transfer application, do that but keep an open mind and hopefully things will improve for you in the spring. i had a similar situation when i was in high school, where i wanted to transfer early on (~october) because i was unhappy and didn't feel challenged. my parents wouldn't let me and it ended up being a fabulous experience for me. you never know what will happen.
