Understanding email from program

OK, so this is part of an email I received from a program today:
"...At this time your application is on hold. If you are not contacted via email by the end of December, you will be considered for any post match positions that may be available..."

Now does this mean that my application is NOT being considered right now, but MIGHT be considered later on depending on how they fill the residency slots? or does this mean that they have my application in their records and they will look at it in due time?

I would contact the program and clarify what this means... last year, I got invites, waitlists and rejections... but nothing about being put on hold and waiting until December...

Waitlists generally said something along the lines of: we have reviewed your application and would like to meet you; however, at this time we currently do not have any spots. Your application will be reconsidered if we have spots open up... yada yada ya...

I agree with Scrubbsy-poo

Try calling them. Tell them you are very interested in their program... and be nice to the Residency Coordinator... be VERY nice.

That email sounds like a rejection to me. They soft pedal everything. It may be a "we'll probably reject you, but you're not out of the running....yet." Remember, Interview=good. Waitlist/Hold/Get lost=bad. Don't worry, there'll be plenty of invites too. It is very early. I got invites as late as Dec 15.
