  1. Pre-Medical
Hey all.

I seem to have gotten myself into a slight issue (at least on my end...). What happened, essentially, is that even though I have been pre-med steering since I was 13, I swore it off when I was 17 and became a musician/amateur historian. Just finished my associates in Liberal arts, now, at 20, and what do you know but I couldn't shrug off medicine anymore, and here I am wishing I'd made this bright discovery this summer, instead of now, when in-person CC classes are already full for this fall. I know I need to complete my bachelor's degree. I initially signed up for UNE online, but I'm now seeing conflicting information about whether medical schools view it negatively in terms of quality and (my own question) program concerns.

I'm willing to do some through my community college system here in NH, but most of them have recently started and aren't accepting students for classes this fall. Now I'm stuck and am struggling to figure out what to do. What do I do? Shadow? Do I take UNE online classes this fall? other pre-med stuff? I've got hospital volunteer hours and am tentatively planning on volunteering as a Ski Patrol this winter, as I have my EMT, for which I'm currently in the process of recertifying. Eventually, I'll only be applying to D.O. medical schools, and currently, the only ones I plan to apply to are UNECOM and NYITCOM. Searched through the forums, before posting, found some info but wanted to ask for opinions. Thanks for any thoughts. I'm new here, and posting for the first time was a little intimidating, I must admit. I've stalked this forum since I was 11, when I was still planning on being a dentist. Just trying to get myself back on track. Thanks!

Are you going to attend the same college where you earned your associates degree for your pre-med prereqs?
Take a little time to get familiar with their registration schedule so you don't find yourself missing it for the next semester.
Or, if you have to gain admission to a different college start learning how to apply to do that.
Until your next enrollment it will be a great time to do some volunteering helping the needy in your own community, and people able to afford to ski probably aren't a needy population.

Why not history of science/medicine?

Ask the admissions teams at UNECOM and NYITCOM about your dilemma. I suspect it will be fine to take some online courses, but they may have more specific advice if you let them look at your transcript.

Above all, get some shadowing. Dentistry and medicine have stark differences you need to weigh. Taking classes is secondary to having a clearer direction and purpose.

1. No. I went to SNHU online for my associates and it was extremely frustrating.
2. Already have it down on my calendar for the spring semester.
3. The other option is volunteering as an EMT for my small town FD. Extremely small town. Might dig up some other opportunities.

thanks for your comment!

I considered pursuing my master's degree in Medical History at JH, but decided against it. As for dentistry, I switched when I realized I didn't have the hand-eye coordination to sculpt teeth in Dental school. That and I was 11, lol. I switched to wanting to be a doctor when I was 13 and held that goal all the way up until 17, when I became a musician. Still kept the medical interest, but I was disillusioned with the process, I think. It's been haunting me in the background ever since. I've been reading medical books, both old and new, since I was 12, and I've maintained that habit throughout the years. Participated in various volunteering and high school medical immersion programs throughout high school. It has been something I've been unable to escape, so I decided rather than regret not pursuing a career in medicine, I'd better get myself in gear and do something about it! I tried so many times in high school to get shadowing opportunities, but the local hospital system is not shadowing-friendly and it was a nightmare trying to get anyone else to agree. I volunteered at my local hospital a lot in high school, though. Thanks for your comment!

Edit: I plan on getting more shadowing hours as soon as I get a timeline etched out in my head. 🙂
