UNE secondary out!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
me too! woohoo! And I already have essays, so it'll go out tomorrow.

Just sent mine in! Glad I had my essays done.

yep, received mine this morning. I should have it out by weds. or thurs. this week.

yeah, just got mine too. why do they need a list of all the schools (allo and osteo) that i applied to this year and in years past???

ugh. I gotta do all the essays tonight after class. 🙁

(prepares for along night with a caffienated beverage)

What gives?!!?

Where's mine???😡

I received it too today, and one point of it really got me upset:

In the supplemental application you will be asked to list ALL the medical schools (osteopathic and allopathic) to which you have applied in the past and/or are applying to this admissions cycle. Please list each school/college on a separate line and include month/year of application.

This school is such a dirty game, just this one point makes want to withdraw.

why does it make you upset?

i don't mind listing mine. unecom is one of my top choices, but if they judge me somehow based on the schools that i'm applying to then i probably wouldn't want to go there. it's possible they are using this information for something else though...

I got it too🙂 Hopefully I will be able to start working on it next week.

So now that the secondary is out, when do they start interviewing?

What a day for me. I interviewed at KCUMB and when I got to the airport and turned on my macbook what do I find but an interview invite from DMU and a fresh secondary that is long overdue from UNECOM!!! I'm lovin it

they're not being mean about it. I think (and this is just a guess on my part) they want to see if they're a "safety school" or if you're really interested in going there. I applied to both MD and DO and listed them all (there were only 8 of each), and not one word was said about it. I got accepted within one week. Yes, I'm a UNECOM MSI now. 🙂 it's really a great place. 👍

=[ One of their essays asks if we had any contact with UNECOM students, alumni, faculty members or clinicians, admissions/student affairs staff members, etc. Unfortunately I have not. Does this look very poorly on me? How would you respond?

UNECOM is not "playing dirty" as you put it. Almost every school I applied to last year asked for the other schools to which I was also applying. UNECOM was my top choice and I was accepted. Nothing was asked about the other schools I applied to. I am in the Class of 2011 at UNECOM starting next fall and can tell you for certain, the school is a great school. The people are amazing and the facilities are top tier. If you have any questions, feel free to email me

Well, couldn't you say you have spoken with students, since they have posted on this site?

Write to James Gaffney and ask him to put you in touch with a current student. Tell him you are applying to UNECOM this year and would like to get an insiders point of view. I luckily enough, knew a few people who were current students there when I applied, and know a lot of people in the class of 2010. I will be a member of the class of 2011. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions about getting in touch w/current students. It sounds like a good idea! Though I feel like I've learned a lot through students on SDN and even how the admissions people have handled the application process so far.

I'm a little sad they ask about the schools you've applied to, just because it's a loong list for me. It might look like they are just one of many because of that, but actually they are one of my top choices. So it bums me out that it might look differently having the long list. But I don't think they are 'playing dirty' at all. It would be easy for them to find out if they wanted to, I would think.

Mine is on the way as well. 😀

I'm heading to see the school next month and can't wait to see the New England coast and local area. Are most of you applying from the eastern US?

The cooler weather will be a nice change, the high in Biddeford is 72 today. That's crazy!

Good luck guys!

When listing date medical schools applied to (month/year) do you just use the month that you hit "submit" to AACOMAS?

Also, for the Statements of Authenticity", how do you initial and date them on an online application? Or are you supposed to print and mail the application? (didn't see mail it anywhere on app or instructions)

Finally, how can the "Describe any contact with anyone from UNECOM" essay be required? Myself, and I am sure others who applied have had none. Is this in essence saying, "Don't bother submitting your secondary if you haven't had any such interaction?" Or, if it is any three out of the four, what if you have nothing significant to add since submitting the AACOMAS that they ask for? This secondary is not my favorite.

Thanks!

I didn't have any contact with anyone from UNECOM when I applied. I did know someone who went here (and who will be a fellow for the c/o 2011 gross anatomy), but I hadn't talked to her before I applied (since she went to UNE that is). No problem.

Don't read too much into the questions folks. They're asking to see if you have any preconceived notions, fallen prey to rumors, etc. that they might have to dispell. It's perfectly ok to tell them you've talked to folks on internet forums that claim to be students from UNE.

Congrats to all who have finally rec'd the supplemental!!! One step closer to meeting some wonderful people, visiting an amazing campus, and checking out how gorgeous the Maine coast really is! I'll be one of the many highly qualified and friendly tour guides for when you all show up for interviews.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me via PM, IM or thru this forum.
As for the "list of schools" question. It is benign. I listed all of the DO and MD schools I applied to just like Shyrem did and I'm here, in class with her and all the other people who were straightforward and honest with the Adcom.
Seriously, I'm sure everyone is sick of hearing this but, relax, be honest, and be yourself. The BS'o'meter will hit red if you try to lay it on too thick...

👍 😀

quick question about UNECOM... i know they give preference to new englanders, but do they give more preference to new hampshire than CT since it is closer? What I am trying to say is: is it ME>>NH, VT>MA>CT?

My impression would be Maine first, b/c that's their only school, and then everyone else equal.

Huh. I hear it's preference for NE area folks, but I'm from CO. So take that with a grain of salt. They do state Mainers have preference, NE after that, and anyone else after that. I dunno. I got in very early on.

Don't read too much into stuff - if you LIKE UNE, apply.

Well I submitted today so yay!
They told me on the phone that they've received about 70 secondaries so far and have begun inviting people for interviews (for October).

I managed to submit my application and forgot to include my list of schools applied to! So I had to email it in... 😳 😳 Major embarassment!! Oh well...

Good luck everyone - I'm excited about UNE! :luck:

I got an interview! My application was complete this morning, and it came around 2:30pm. 10/10. Yahoo!

Add yourself to The Wall! 👍

Just got an e-mail that I have an interview on 10/10!!! So excited!!!

Complete as of just now, hopeing for an interview.

I wish you all the best of luck :luck: :luck: :luck: on your interviews next month!! You will love UNECOM. Congrats!

Yay! They just sent me an invitation to interview on the 12th! 😍

Since someone will probably want to know, I submitted their secondary early last week.

Good luck everyone! :luck:

Mmmm... the 10th. Lemme see.... well, the med students should all be fat & happy - we will just be coming off a long weekend. So we'll either be happy and relaxed, or freakin' out 'cuz we didn't do anything over the 4-day weekend and are STILL 2 weeks behind!!

🙂

On the 12th, you may not see many MS1's around the afternoon. Thursday afternoons are generally for preceptorships, but we'll try to stick around in the cafe' in case you have questions. Or at least *I*'ll try to stick around for a while in the cafe studying after anatomy lab ends at noon!!

Good luck folks. :luck:

That's great - thanks ShyRem! Definitely looking forward to this 😀

Where'd you get that avatar, Wook - are you a trumpet player??

Is UNE one of the schools that gives laptops and/or handhelds to students? It doesn't look like it to me...

Nothing distributed to students like DMU, but UNE allots an extra $2K in the first year budget for computer and PDA purchase. That way you can get what you like. (which I personally preferred -- I HATE Dells and really wanted the X41 tablet.) And if you decide to get a budget computer you keep the extra $$. I'd recommend getting something you like very much. You'll be using it a lot. at least one person in my class budgeted the extra funds for something other than a computer and thought they'd "make do" with their old one -- one of those has had a major hard drive crash every week for the past month. They're going to suck it up and buy a new computer and do without some of the "extras" they were planning on.

Well that's interesting. I'm not totally sure what it means that they have it in the first year budget exactly. So it's part of your tuition but you keep it to buy something? Once I saw the computers DMU was giving students I wasn't really all that excited about the fact that they have lower tuition AND give students computers! Then I thought bringing my own would make sense, wherever I go - but now you're making me think twice about that, too - it's hardly new... Eh - plenty of time to think about that later, I was just curious. Thanks for the input.

The avatar is from my Uncle's funeral at Arlington a few years ago. He was a veteran from Vietnam.

The money allocated aside for computers is in your student loans. As Shy said you get a couple of grand (no idea what the amount is these days) budgeted for the computer into the student loans the first year. It does give you flexibility to purchase what you want, but they do have technical specifcations that help guide the decision process. The reality is that the technical specs are guidelines NOT requirements, but if you need technical support from the computer folks at UNE they may not be able to help you if you haven't tried to follow the guidelines a tad.
