I have been accepted to both schools.

Which would provide me with the best education, residency opportunities, and quality of life?

They are both pretty far from me bc I live in the south...

Thanks everyone!

Congrats on the early acceptances. Personally, Tuition over everything.UNECOM 53K vs. AZCOM 63K

Your environment is going to be the same wherever you go (75 degrees with fluorescent lighting). Your residency opportunity for both is going to based on your ability alone. Both have a history of matching well.

Only reason personally I would choose AZCOM is if clinical rotations were better suited to my career aspirations. Check out how each school assigns clinical rotations (Lottery, GPA,COMLEX, etc).

Does 4th year have purely elective rotations that would allow you to travel? That might be better if you are interested in surgery, more competitive fields that require auditions. Do you want more direction and have rotations determined in 4th year? That might be better if you are interested in the primary fields that don't usually require an audition rotation.

AZCOM used to have some core rotation sites in the outskirts of Yuma which, if you're not familiar with the layout of the state, is literally in the middle of no where. I'm not sure if that's still the case, but a few years ago, their locations could be pretty bleak. But, 1) This may no longer be applicable and/or, 2) it may not matter to you. Just food for thought.

Not sure which school this applies to, but you may want to consider going to the school that wastes the least amount of time on OMM.

UNE now has mandatory lectures for first year students. That might be a factor in your decision. The class determines the way that rotation sites are divvied up, but typically 95% of students end up at a site they are relatively happy with. OMM is a big deal in first year, but not so much in second.

Ooh! Did you confirm that it's only for first years?? (Still hoping for an overturn of that decision, regardless...)

Bump. Anyone else? I'm still having a hard time making up my mind...

Personally I would attend UNECOM. I could give some disputable whys and why nots, but in the end it's really up to you going with your gut. Both are excellent medical schools.

I would go with UNECOM, I've read decent things on the forums about their rotations. Also their campus...BEAUT

I would go with UNECOM but I don't think you can go wrong with either. Here's some food for thought since I don't know much about the education at both besides they're both great.

110 summers vs harsh winters
East coast vs Southwest
Southwest food vs Crab(I think that's what Maine is known for?)

This is easy

Seafood vs Mexican?

I think it's lobster! i've heard Maryland is known for crabs

I think the education is pretty much the same across both schools, so it comes down tuition and location. For me, the big factor was location.

There's definitely way more things to do in phoenix. Lots of grocery stores, shopping centers, and outdoor activities. Nightlife is pretty awesome too (scottsdale and tempe are about 30 mins away)

Phoenix gets ridiculously hot in the summers. I'm from the south too so it wasn't too hard to adjust to the weather. The rest of the year is nice.

The campus is beautiful and we have other health professions on campus too (dental, pharmacy, etc.).

AZCOM is expensive but I love it. If tuition is a big deal for you, go with UNECOM.

Any comments on UNE's required 4 weeks OMT rotation in 4th year? Also where are most rotations done for UNE, Boston? Portland?

I can't speak for the OMT rotation, but I believe most rotations core rotations are scattered throughout southern/middle Maine, Rhode Island, NJ, NY, and central Mass.

Seems like it from my more involved googling. How much of a pain is that? It seems like there'd be a lot of subletting and driving all over even with the NE being relatively compact.

I don't think it's more subletting and driving than most other med schools per se, because you'll do most of your third year rotations at one core site, and most of the others are electives, just like any other med school. Yes, new england drivers tend to be aggressive, but it's not as bad as some make it seem.

UNECOM is NOT what it was. I am a first year as of this past Fall and I am miserable. They have made all lectures (up to 8 hours a day of sitting in the same spot) MANDATORY. They have some, frankly, draconian new policies in place that are new also this year that make it a very terrifying place. Some of my friends have been kicked out already in their first semester of their first year because they narrowly missed passing a Block exam. And, don't get me wrong - they passed the course, but missed an exam. They will throw out the baby with the bathwater here without two thoughts about how devastating that is for a student. They don't care and won't bat an eye if you miss an exam by a few points. Go anywhere else but here. I regret my choice so, so deeply. But, of course, it was NOT like this when I accepted my place among the class last winter. DO NOT GO HERE. YOU WILL REGRET IT.
