I'm currently doing some of my prereqs at a city college (four-year school, not CC). I'm thinking about doing USF's unstructured, informal post-bacc in the Fall, but I'm also considering the formal post-bacc at UNF. Does anyone know anything about either of these programs? I really thrive in smaller classes, which is what's leading me towards UNF, but I don't know which one is better overall.

I dont know anything about UNF's program, but if you are aiming to go to USF med, i would suggest doing usf's unstructured post bac. At least then you are doing it at a school that has a medical school and you can make some connections and possibly get letters of recommendation from professors who are colleagues with the people on the admissions committee. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks! I thought about that as well. I just want to be somewhere where I can learn the material. Science doesn't come easily to me and I've had to work extremely hard for every A I've gotten so far (not that others don't. I just mean some of my classmates pick it up a lot faster than I do). I'm doing great at learning the concepts at the school I'm at now, but I'd like to go to a school people have actually heard of so there will be no questions come application time. I've heard great things about the program at UNF, but, unfortunately, I don't know anyone who's actually been through it. Everyone just goes by word of mouth. I've heard things about USF's program as well. Mixed reviews though.

Going to USF med school isn't a priority though. I'm certainly applying, but I don't have a first-choice school just yet.

Hi there,
What good things have you heard about UNF? I'm considering applying for Spring. Do you know how competitive it is to get in?
Thanks!

It doesn't seem like it is any difficulty to really get into either...I am considering both. I am leaning towards USF simply because of the medschool there might help out a bit, and also I emailed them with a bunch of questions and they actually seemed eager to help and explained how if I couldn't make it down to the campus we could organize classes via phone and stuff just fine. From what I've been reading..there REALLY doesn't seem like too much of a difference between the two programs. The lady from USF said that you can take the minimal courses, continue for the certificate, or go for the degree....doesn't really matter too much to them. They don't put the gpa reqs from what I can see but personally I couldn't afford to drop below a 3.5 anyway. The best part about UNF seemed to be the help with volunteering stuff...which I asked the USF person about chances for research or hospital volunteering and she said there are plenty of spots throughout the area for both, although USF actually prefers hospital volunteering to make yourself appear more as a "public servant" than the research...which is good for me because I don't have any research under my belt and much rather spend time in the hospital anyway. If you are a Florida resident both programs are pretty reasonably priced. Miami doesn't seem too bad with the chance to link to their school but the price is so much more, plus the housing and everything for the area would be as well. I think the driving factor for me will be that I can get home faster from Tampa as well as I just like the town better than Jacksonville and with my current undergraduate degree I might be able to get a reasonable part time job if needed....and the most important I am REALLY not picky as long as I get into medschool...USF offers a lot of great oppurtunities all the way through residency...(barring the anesthesiology program which I haven't heard good about) and if anything I could PERHAPS brown nose a bit to help with getting in there. 😀
