In answering the "why military medicine" part of the secondary, do you all think it is necessary OR cliche to say things like "I want to serve my country" or "I want to help military veterans"? Granted, I will be saying those things in a different way so it won't sound SO cliche but still... Seems like if you are applying to USUHS you better mention those things in your app... Maybe not. Your thoughts?

Those statements are a bit cliche, but I think they need to be discussed. Just remember that given the nature of the job, all doctors serve their country; also, many med schools are affiliated with a VA clinic, so serving veterans is not unique to military medicine. You need to go beyond these ideas to stand out with the adcom.

When I was in your shoes I discussed wanting to be an officer and leader, as well as a doctor. I also focused on my interest in operational medicine. These topics show USUHS that you know what you are getting into and are not just applying out of blind patriotism or fear of debt.

Good luck with your app! The USUHS grads I have met all love the place and rave about the quality of the classes.

USUHS requires a semester of calculus, which I have taken. However, the name of the course does not have the work Calculus in it, but it is in the course description.

Should I write an addendum on the issue, or just wait for them to ask about it?

If you think I should comment on it, what should I tell them and/or send them.

Hehe, I would call up an officer recruiter (one that can tell you about the HPSP) and ask THEM "why military medicine?" Just take some notes >).

Just curious, why do you want to go to USUHS over HPSP or just getting a direct commission later?

USUHS has some benefits like full officer pay, which is a lot higher than the HPSP stipend.

That being said, I interviewed and was wait-listed there a couple years ago, but will not be reapplying.

Hopefully you enjoy the school and take the time to talk with the military forum regarding various things like physician duties and GMO tours.
