I will be a rising sophomore this summer and am currently looking for summer jobs in a medical setting to gain some experience. I found lots of part time jobs for unit secretaries- one in orthopedic surgery and one in pediatric emergency (two specialties I am highly interested in). I seem to meet most of the qualifications for the job (a HS diploma and coursework in medical support, I do not have the latter). Does anyone have experience as a unit secretary? Should I apply to these jobs or is it inappropriate for my level of experience? Thanks.

Uhh if you don't meet the requirements you're likely not going to get the job. Unit secretaries usually take care of billing/filing and the backend work of admitting and discharging patients. It's not the HS diploma they care about, it's the medical unit training.

You would get more experience by actually volunteering or shadowing in those fields you're interested in. You're not going to get much patient exposure as a unit secretary apart from brief interaction and being in their chart. And you're certainly not going to be observing the physician-patient interaction.

I am a unit secretary and I get a lot of patient interaction. I also get to see the physician/patient relationship on a daily basis.

I would call the department and ask what the job entails. Each department/facility is different.
