Hi guys!

I know this may seem like a very silly thread to some people, but I want to comfort myself a little here.

I just got accepted to participate in Unite For Sight in Ghana, and I have to sign a waiver for it. Now, the waiver lists all sorts of atrocious risks, like murder, rape, terrorist attacks, all diseases under the sun, etc.. I want to know if any of these things actually tend to happen abroad. I know they HAVE to make you sign this in order to cover themselves, and I understand that... I just want to know if this opportunity, as wonderful as it is, actually poses "life risks" as listed in the waiver on a regular or not-so-regular basis.

Have any of you participants actually had issues with regard to health or safety while in the program?

I'm looking for serious answers only please... you can save the trolling for some other time. 😉

Experienced all of the above

I know an ophthalmologist who went to Ghana with Unite for Sight and no, he did not experience any of those dangers... well.. anytime you go to any 3rd world country there's a chance of getting some tropical disease (ie malaria). Take all your vaccines beforehand. If you feel fevers, see an ID specialist when you get back. As long as you don't stick yourself with a needle, most infectious diseases are easily treatable.

All these groups take security serious and are good at avoiding risky situations.

My only issue with Unite for Sight is that it's loaded with students who have little interest in humanitarian aid and are jsut looking to check the box on their med school application for participating in a foreign medical aid trip.

That's very reassuring, thank you. 🙂

And that's definitely not my reason for doing this. I have to fundraise about $7,000 independently in order to finance my trip, and that's on top of the $1,800 that I have to fundraise for the organization. Just a box to check off wouldn't be worth that much to me.
