Hey everyone...whats the general feel for the UAB Surgery program. I know in the past (ie. previous chairman days) it has been known as producing technically skilled surgeons, but was thought to have been one of the more malignant programs in the country.

Now however, their new chairman, Dr. Bland has apparently turned the place around and great things are supposed to be going on at UAB. Anyone with any friends there as surgery residents, or anyone with the inside scoop please post it on this thread for everyone to see.

I'm currently an MS4 @UAB and am on the Surg Onc service. IMO, UAB is a great program, and Kirby Bland has made several changes which has made the program much less malignant. Residents are generally happy with the program and get along well. There are, of course, several strong personalities so having a thick skin is a necessity.

Residents (and students 🙂) work hard and undergo the usual frustrations of training, but it is managable. Attendings are serious about the 80 hr work week, and one attending actually has residents turn in index cards daily during morning report and critiques each resident's time openly.

I have to hit the floor @4:15 so I have to cut this short. Feel free to pm me if you have questions.
