Has anybody interviewed here? I was considering canceling my interview since I had seen pretty mixed/bad reviews of the program. :arghh: I really like the area of Miami and I have a lot of family there so I would love to end up in the area, but the reputation of the program scares me a little. Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks!! 😀

Hello, I would not cancel your interview! Miami is a nice city if you like it and what it has to offer. I have interviewed at this program. My understanding is that those "mixed/bad" reviews were from a few years back so the program has worked on improving some of those issues, at least this is what a resident has told me. I liked that the program seems to have a lot of patient exposure in psychiatry, basically you will see it all if you go there and be a competent psychiatrist, able to handle anything. My view is that all residency programs are what you make them.

You need to go check it out if it is on your radar, especially if you have family or if you want to end up in South Florida anyway. --> IMHO, if I wanted to live in Miami to be close to family, this program would be #1 on my list.

Yea I interviewed with an attending who confirmed that the residents there are worked hard.

I heard their psych ER is one of the busiest in the country.

They work very hard but you will see all the zebras you want. Depends on what you’re looking for

I'd keep it on the list if you're interested in a hard-working community psychiatry program. And if you like Miami. Speaking Spanish would be a plus too.

woah, k let me step in for a sec as the above comments seem distorted. I'm a current resident here.

Essentially this is an academic 'work horse' program, and only in sense that you find 50h/week particularly challenging. Again, if you interested in the quite numerous areas of clinical/neurobiologic research going on here, the dynamic here is comparable to 'top tier' programs (been publishing/presenting cool stuff at conferences).

That being said, this place is for fairly pro active people who can take the larger than avg workload in stride and still go after the extracurriculars, course with time to enjoy miami/etc.

Our call does suck more than avg programs bc we cover 3 hospital systems on same campus. The program/faculty likes to exaggerate how hard ppl work so that no one comes here expecting a cake walk from the get-go which may be preferred. Again, i fit in this program well and have not found it partic tough. not easy but hey it is residency afterall..

-feel free to shoot me msg

I work at Jackson/Miami. I just wanted to point out the truth here, the above poster posted support of the program but does not give a glowing review. The real problem isn't the work load. The real problem is the total disregard of residents' well being and resident feed back.

I'm a current resident here. Although we have some differing opinions, mine is that it is a good program. I think we work about as much as any other program, call is not too hard, and 4th years don't have call at all. The inpatient psych units are not as busy as they use to be and I don't think our clinic experience is all that stressful in third year. Yes there have been past complaints, but the program seems to try to work on those issues.

There is a small element of truth in animalannon's post... I can see where some of our residents could feel that way, but honestly, you need to ask your self if other programs are like that too? I don't know to be honest since I've only been at this one.

Just my 2 cents, I don't think it is that bad.

Feel free to email me with questions if you want.
