Graduate of University of Michigan. Confused whether to classify UM as a trimester or semester system. I never thought of it as a trimester system in my four years because we had a Fall semester and a Winter semester, then Summer was broken up into two condensed smaller terms: Spring term and Summer term. Together the two summer terms are the same length of time as a normal semester.

But on the back of the official transcript, it says "The University of Michigan operates under the trimester calendar. A unit of credit is a semester hour."

If you're talking about adding classes for Spring Summer semester, each credit is like how it would be in winter fall. Genetics is 3 credits in Winter and in Spring so just enter how it appears. I don't think in the transcript entry you have to enter if your schools on semester or trimester based but I might be wrong on that. We were semester based cause like you said spring and summer were separate. Hope that helps. Pm me if you had more qs

Under "Academic Term" in the course work section, you have to designate whether your school ran on a Semester System, Quarter System, Trimester System, 4-1-4 system, or other. I am confused whether Michigan is a Semester System or Trimester System.

The different terms under Semester System are:
Summer Semester (Summer)
1st Semester (Fall)
2nd Semester (Spring)
Mini Semester (Winter/Spring)

The different terms under the Trimester System are:
Summer Trimester (Summer)
1st Trimester (Fall)
2nd Trimester (Winter)
3rd Trimester (Spring)

I am confused because the University says it runs off a "trimester calendar" but we go to school for two semesters, Fall and Winter.

Hm, pretty sure we are under the Semester System. My guess is that our Office of the Registrar is using the word "trimester" with a slightly different connotation than what AMCAS defines as such.

After doing a bunch of research, Michigan is in fact under the trimester system, and I've entered my coursework as such.

Michigan as a trimester system is even under the Wikipedia page for academic terms lol

My gf applied last cycle and a UMich grad and entered all hers under semesters. Weird.

Yeah I feel like if someone didn't take any spring/summer classes, it really isn't different from a semester system with Fall/Winter.

Go Blue & good luck to you both

Thanks for posting this... guess I’ll go back and delete my coursework and try again. I thought it was weird that the UM Winter semester is what every other school called a Spring semester.
