This is one of my top choices
I was hoping that anyone who perhaps attends this medical school or currently is a resident here could comment on the training and overall experience

This is for a categorical position in IM

Thank you

I'm a fourth year at UT. The training you get here is fantastic. Very, VERY diverse (and in many cases, unique) pathologies across the three hospitals you train at (Regional Medical Center, VA, and Methodist University).

To me, the only downside is the city itself. Memphis doesn't have a lot going on culturally, and if you haven't lived in an urban center before, you may not know how to handle certain types of people. But, that being said, it's not a horrible city at all.

Did you have any specific questions about the program?

Moved to Memphis 1.5 years ago, and it's not as bad of a city as people say if you stay smart. I recently got hired at the MED non-physician clinician and wouldn't want to work anywhere else in Memphis. Incredible place to learn. Expect to see lots of impoverished patients. I enjoy the med best from the trauma aspect.

thanks for your reply.
I agree about the city I really enjoyed it when I was there

I am having a bit of a hard time trying to rank this program. From what I can tell, the hospitals are fantastic places to train, with lots of high acuity patients and broad pathology. They also seem to have research going on in just about every subspecialty that rates as anywhere from good to excellent. Not to mention in-house fellowship options for every subspecialty.

That being said, it seems like this program is not considered to be one of the top rated programs in the south, let alone nationally. I think the relatively high percentage of IMGs in every class sort of attests to that as well (whether that is fair or not is another discussion). So what are the major shortcomings I am missing here? Is it just that people really dislike the city of Memphis? Is there a hint of malignancy in the training environment at UTHSC that you can't really pick up on from a single interview day?

Would really love to hear some thoughts on this. Thanks!

Memphis has a lot of clubs and some great restaurants. There are casinos near by. The Horseshoe Tunica, which has an excellent poker room, is less than 45 minutes away

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I'm very interested in this program and was wondering if any current/previous residents could chime in on their overall experience in this program? Thanks!!

Nope but they must be talking about a different city. Memphis sucks monkey balls... Besides Elvis home and Bbq of course!!

Old thread bump...

Besides Memphis (I’m pretty familiar with the city itself), why isn’t this program at least a little more highly regarded? It doesn’t seem like people have a terrible time getting fellowships, they have plenty of research, every Subspecialty you could dream of, etc
