Well, this is a shout out to all uofa class of 2008 on this forum.. I'm kind of bored right now, so I thought I'd start a get-to-know you disscussion for our future classmates.... anyway, I'm in Boston right now, anxiously waiting to return to AZ in a couple weeks 😱 😱

So, at the risk of sounding incredibly lame, whats up with all of you ?

😎

Hey CNN,

So you live in Boston but you are an Arizona resident? Are you a traditional or a non-traditional student?

I am in Phoenix but will be moving to Tucson once my house is available. I am married, 2 kids, and my wife is pregnant with the third. As you can see, I am a non-traditional student and have been out of school for quite a few years.

I can't wait to quit my job in a couple months and become a full-time student again. Look forward to hearing more about you.

Scott

Sweet, glad to see some discourse going on now instead of just names. First off I need to warn the rest of you about Goldberg and Pierce, they are nothing but trouble. They try everyday to get me to ditch Cell Bio with them, but I'm better than that! Sheesh. 😉 Anyway, I'm just trying to make it through the next three weeks before graduation. Frantically trying to finish my silly thesis and study for finals (haha good one). I'll be doing some traveling this summer before class starts, heading off to Morocco, Spain and Portugal. One last hurrah before med school. Anyone else have exciting summer plans? I'm still trying to find a place to live so if anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear them. Other than that not much excitement here. Keep the messages coming!

Brandis (I've heard there are at least 3 Aaron's in the class, so last name it is)

All right! Sorry to butt in, but this is a great place to ask some questions about U of A...I'm applying this coming year, and AZ is my state school. I hate to throw stats out, but maybe you can help...I have a 3.8 Undergrad GPA, and a 3.93 postbac GPA at Johns Hopkins. MCAT is 30R. My EC's are strong, but nothing really strong in medicine (I'm an EMT, have done a few internships/some shadowing, and no research; the rest is all related to outdoors stuff (leading climbing/backpacking trips).

I'm really just curious to hear what you have to say about the app process to AZ. I've heard that the application process at U of A is sort of hit or miss. What has been your experience? Do you think I stand a chance, and/or is there something in particular that they seemed to be looking for?

Also, AZ is my home state, but I went to college in CA and post-bac in MD. Are they more interested in students who stayed in AZ for school? I would LOVE to go to U of A. Thanks ahead of time for your help!!

Your stats definitely are on par or exceed the averages. The average GPA is something like 3.5 and the average MCAT is just above 29. So on that front you're looking good. From my limited experience they like to see some clinical experience. I have a friend whose application was virtually identical to mine but I had a lot of clinical experience and he had almost none. I got in and he was rejected. Looking at your list I think you'll be fine in that area as well. The goal of the school is to train physicians that will stay in Arizona and practice here. I don't think they will hold it against you that you went to college out of state as long as you show some interest in staying in Arizona after you finish. While it is true that the process seems very hit or miss I think they hit the right people most of the time. Almost all the people I know who have been admitted to the latest class are really cool people and are in medicine for the right reasons. So basically from just reading your post I'd say you have a good chance. Your numbers are strong and you seem well rounded. Good luck with the application process and feel free to ask more questions if you have any!

Hi

Sorry to put this here ..... I did my MBA and MS-MIS from UofA and would have stayed in AZ but had to move because of family reasons. I am not an AZ state resident ... will my having had attended UA in past have any sort of weightage during the admissions or will my file be sidelined after seeing that I am not an AZ resident ...... Stats are better than avg GPA ... waiting on my MCATs .....

Any thoughts will be welcome

In order to even be considered for admission you need to be an Arizona resident or a WICHE student. So even though you've received degrees from the U of A you won't be able to go to med school here. I'd save the $30 AMCAS fee and not bother applying. Sorry 🙁

Hey what's up, everyone? Anybody going to the May 7th thing? Seems like most people had the earlier date. Should be fun...

Now I just have to find a place to live in Tucson - hopefully there's something left! 😱

I'll be there May 7th. Do you know what time it starts and where we meet? I lost the sheet that had all that info. Thanks

Rainwoman,

I agree that you should have an excellent chance... The EMT experience is one that you should definately talk about in your statement and throwing some of your experience stories in definately makes you more interesting to them. It seems you have a solid base with which to get accepted on- you should devote some time to finding the best way to get your experience and passion for medicine across..

good luck!

I guess I'm kind of a non-traditional applicant.. or I should say, re-applicant.. I was traditional when I first applied (i.e. junior year at ASU, bla, bla..).. But didn't get in right away, so i decided to check out this program at BU Med.. Its a masters in medical science program, which basically means you get to take med school classes with the first years, and show that you can hack it 🙂

Its been quite an experience coming from AZ, where I grew up, to the east coast.. But I'm defiantely looking forward to returning home 😀

I went to the April reception. What's the difference, is the May one the same thing?

As for the other question, I am looking at townhouses and condos now, and will live with a Pharmacy student friend and commute home on weekend to see my husband in Phx. PM me if you are looking and have questions.

Does anyone have the sample class schedule handy? I want to know if we go 8-5 every day, or if there are some days we get out sooner. I am out of the country and don't have my stuff with me, and I found the spring schedule on the website only. I am wondering about this fall (or MS1 first semester). Thanks.

who here is from/living in Phoenix until orientation?
My friend started an "alternative bridge program" for happy hours in town until school starts to get together and meet other incoming MS1's.

PM me if you are interested in checking it out & want to be added to the invite list.

Since nobody has posted here for 2 months except OldLady, I thought I'd join in. Is anyone here doing the Bridge Program? The "alternative Bridge Program" sounds interesting, so can you give more info about it, OldLady? Has anyone started reading that book or writing your essay? I can't believe we have homework before starting school! I have too much to do with work, moving, vacation, and starting school to think about doing homework!

Hey guys,
On average where does UofA rank among other med schools?

It's just Happy Hour get-togethers up in Phx to get to know one another before orientation....if you'd like to be added to the e-vite, send me a PM with your email address. That goes for any UA College of Medicine folks, class of 2008 or otherwise. One of my good friends is a graduate from there and will be Chief of Medicine at Good Sam this year, and she promised to come by.

I was going to do the bridge program but had to cancel due to family conflicts. I just got the book....not too psyched to write a paper but oh well, it should go fast since it's personal impact stuff. this new Dean seems eager to incorporate updated curriculum ideas which may be a good thing.

they don't participate as far as I know....I don't think they report average MCATs. You can look at their NIH funding relative to other schools, they do quite a bit in Cancer and Cards so they do get some money. Don't worry about the rankings. Go with your gut. or if you care about the rankings, don't apply to UA. There are plenty of people (myself included) who turn down "highly ranked" schools to attend UA. In my case, it wasn't even because UA is cheaper b/c I got lots of scholarship money, it was about where I wanted to be the next 4 years. See how you feel when you interview places.

Well, it's good to see so many 1st years posting here. I just found out about these forums a little while ago. I'm in the class of 2007 here at the U of A. Let me know if you have any questions. Welcome to Tucson.

Well congrat to all of you 👍 . I think you must be excited for your accomplishment.
Anyway I will applying to UofA next year and I think it would help if you provide your stats and background.
Thanks and congrat one more time.

I was just wondering if anyone knew how far down the waitlist they made it this year. Thx.

i think as of last week they were in the early thirties...after having almost no movement for most of june. things may have changed since then, but i believe that last year they took 41.

hope that helps.
