I'm out of state for UIC but heard that if you're a minority you may still qualify for the instate tuition. Is this true? What are the qualifications or criteria for that? I'm South Asian, not sure if that's a minority.

i've heard the same thing, though i bet that's for urm's only (mexican, black, or native-american students).

Sorry bud .. I believe they offer in-state tuition to 25 OOS minority students, but I don't think South Asian counts as a minority

If memory serves, UIC does something fishy. So first year since you have summer break off, your tuition is something. Second through fourth year, er, maybe third since no summer fourth year, they increase tuition claiming summer is an additional term.

its not really fishy cause when u check out the tuition on their site, they list out all 4 yrs' tuition. and if memory serves me correctly, its only 4-5k extra for 2nd and 3rd yr.

$10,000 extra in tuition for M2/M3 summers for IS, $22,000 OOS.

Withdrew after an acceptance elsewhere b/c of the tuition... Chicago's a fun place, but I don't quite have this budget: http://www.medicine.uic.edu/finaid/cost/COA/
Also I believe the in-state tuition qualification is based on URM status as well.

That's higher than what they gave us at the interview! WHY DOES TUITION AUTOMATICALLY RAISE AT EVERY SCHOOL EVERY YEAR NO MATTER WHAT?!?!

a) because they can.
b) I don't know about other schools, but I believe the state of IL owes UI like 250 million or so. I think for UG UIC is raising tuition 6.something %.

Right now - recession and high unemployment means less tax revenue so smaller state budgets. State assistance for college is usually one of the first things on the chopping block.

Is the scholarship just for URMs? Is there a link that describes this scholarship, or is it all hearsay?

If I remember correctly, the number is more like 450 million. Although that was last spring at UIUC so I could be wrong...

It's hearsay. I am URM and they haven't mentioned anything to me about instate tuition waiver, and when I called to verify it , I was told that 25 OOS students who bring diversity to the COM will be offered the waiver- ethnicity is not a factor of diversity as itself.

:luck:

Thanks for your input! Did they tell you around when they would be handing those out?

Someone in the SSD already posted about receiving one of these (in February).

Heyy, thanks 🙂 I'm sure admissions is all ready to kill me now for just posting about it but yeah I had nooo idea they even had these scholarships but the letter just basically said that I was selected for 1 of 25 college of medicine non-resident scholarships offered with admission..."the committee members believe that your diverse backgrounds and strong overall qualifications, for medical school will enrich our Class of 2015, and our student body. Given our mission, we strive to recruit individuals, like you, to attend our medical school..." And so forth. I had no idea about this and didn't submit anything extra. But I was accepted back in November, and got my placement late December so it's been a while since I've been accepted so maybe just wait it out? Hope that helps!

Yeah she (Linda) said that they were still reviewing applicants for it- I hope they are still reviewing applicants because 440K total debt makes me nauseous.
