Hey everyone!

Just mailed my deposit today and wanted to start a thread to get the Illinois class of 2017 together on SDN! Can't wait to meet everyone in August!

Excited to be an Illini Vet! 🙂

I'm so excited!! I'm mailing in my deposit on Friday. It won't feel official to me until I pass physics though...I hate physics 🙁

Can't wait to get more information and to buy my first stethoscope! Anyone know when we should start figuring out housing??

Also, does anyone happen to know anything about the benefits we get for being vet students at U of I? As in, reduced prices for vet care? Cheap vaccines? Cheap pet food? I've heard rumors about all of these things and I just wanted to confirm! 🙂

I can feel your physics pain. I'm studying for my exam on Monday now actually (well this is a study break lol). At least we only need to pass!

I can't wait to get mine too! It will be exciting

I currently attend U of I for undergrad so I am somewhat familiar with the housing options down here. I know there's always places available so it's good to shop around. There are many apartments / houses for rent.

I know the current vet students at U of I have their finals this week so they are probably busy, but when you guys get a breather would you mind giving us some input on good housing options for vet students? Maybe we can make a list?

I have also heard that by being a vet student you can get reduced rates on veterinary care there for your animals, but I'm not sure exactly how it works as I do not have pets on campus.

Benefits (this isn't everything, just what I thought of off the top of my head):
- Reduced price food from Hill's and Purina
- Discount at the teaching hospital (not sure how much though since I don't take my pets here) and a lot of area vets provide discounts to students
- Vaccine clinics twice a year
- free heartworm testing night once a year
- free products from Bayer, Merial, and Dechra (maybe some other companies, I don't remember)
- As a UIUC student you can ride their buses for free and use their gyms for free

For housing, look up the tenant union, they have a list of places that accept pets and keep records on complaints against landlords. I know a lot of people live at the Village and like it. I honestly don't know much about housing options. I lived at Champaign House and hated it and now I live in Winfield Village (which is not to be confused with The Village) and love it

Hey if you don't mind me asking, how much is rent at The Village?

Also, if current students could give some input on this...how did you guys work out a living situation first year? Did you contact other first years? Live alone? Live with people you already knew?

Thanks!:naughty:

Here's their website. A couple of my friends have lived there before and it's not too bad. I would say compared to other places it is a bit more expensive but that's cuz it's newer construction and each bedroom has it's own bathroom.

Thanks for the info! Thanks for the update on Champaign House (that's run by McKinley properties I think) as I was looking at them as well. What did you not like about it if you don't mind me asking? I was looking at online reviews and I see they haven't gotten the best reviews, and they charge extra for pets I believe?

All my vet med friends LOVE Winfield Village, I heard it's very popular among vet students.

Yes I have this same dilemma, I can't decide about whether it is best to live alone or with other first years. Most of the people I know at school are graduating this year, have signed leases already, or are going to be vet students and have decided to attend vet school elsewhere or to live with non vet-med roommates.

I have lived alone in a single room of a residence hall for the past 3 years and I enjoy the privacy and the fact that it is always quiet (I'm very sensitive to noise when I'm studying and work best with quiet). However, I do enjoy interacting with other people as well and I think the idea of a roommate would be nice for company but I'm concerned about finding someone compatible to live with who would understand the studious lifestyle of a vet student (and since I haven't really had a roommate in 3 years). I've heard mixed things about living with other vet students which kinda makes me nervous; some people say it's nice to have your own place to get away from school, have quiet, and relax and others say it is helpful to save on rent, make friendships, and you could study with them.

I worry about getting lonely in a single apartment but I figured with all the studying that vet students have to do you don't really have time anyways to socialize with your roommates all the time. And I guess if you wanted someone over you could always invite them over and you see them at school all day long.

So yes any input on this topic would be great! I've already read through the other threads but am still feeling VERY indecisive 🙁

Hey y'all! I can't wait to meet everyone in the fall! I still don't think I have fully processed the good news! I am on the alternate list at 6 schools, including my in-state school, so if I get in there I may accept. Very good chance I'll be joining y'all in August though! Is there a Facebook group for our class yet? Haven't been able to did one.

The Champaign House apartments seemed nice initially, lots of grad students and families but that changed as we were living there. There were more and more cops visiting our neighbors (I don't know what for) and I was woken up on multiple occasions by loud neighbors. The office staff were nice but very disorganized and it was difficult to get anything done with them. It took over a week for our hot water heater to get replaced when it broke, we had issues with people parking in our assigned parking space and they did nothing about it, they never plowed the lots or sidewalks when it snowed and our car got stuck 5 times one winter because of that, etc. etc. I don't think the service you get is worth the rent and it's not a conducive environment to studying.

For looking for a living situation: you guys will get an official Facebook page set up via the school at some point and upperclassman will post living opportunists on there. It's also a good way to meet classmates to potentially live with.

For Winfield Village - their deposit is HUGE but it collects interest and as long as you don't wreck your apartment you get that money back. My husband and I had to put ~$8000 down but our rent is $560 for a two bedroom with a balcony and that includes gas. There's a fenced in "dog park" on the property, each apartment complex has a washer and dryer, the office staff are great and get things fixed pretty quickly, and they are very pet friendly.

Tco pretty much has laid it out. I would check with the tenant union as they are a great resource to finding a place. Most vet students live in Savoy. I know quite a few students live in the village, however, I have heard very mixed reviews about the place, and over all, I am glad I am not living there.

As for living by yourself or with a roommate that is really a personal preference. Like Tco said a facebook page will be created for your class soon and many people match up with roommates there. Housing options are also frequently posted on the facebook page group.

Littmanncomes to the school and has a promotion on their stethoscopes during orientation week and you save like, $40 bucks.

I've been looking online at different housing options, specifically in regards to the pet policy. A lot seem to allow small dogs under 35 lbs. I have heard from other schools that if you call the leasing agency and say you are going to vet school they tend to be a little more lenient with their pet policies. Does this hold true at U of I? I haven't 100% made up my mind yet but I am definitely learning towards Illinois and will bringing a 75 lb lab mix (who is 9 and sleeps all day) and 2 cats.

Also, are there any sketchy areas to avoid in Champaign/Urbana?

West Bradley, is the main sketch area in my mind to avoid. I know there are places around here that do allow bigger dogs and I have heard of landlords accepting the pet after meeting them. Its just like anywhere else, depends on the leasing agent.

I can't wait to head to campus in August! I am currently looking at The Village but would love to hear any feedback (positive or negative) about it. Thanks! 🙂

Hey DogDays! Congrats! look forward to meeting you too. Good luck with your instate school of course! There is a facebook group for our class but I believe that the admissions office adds us there once we send in our deposit.

I agree! Between living here for the past 4 years and from what my friend has told me who has lived here her whole life, I would avoid west Bradley area and anywhere around 'campus town' (slightly west of Green and Wright). Campus town is much more noisy and more crime tends to occur there. So yeah, I'd avoid most parts of Northern Campaign.

There are also lots of single family homes that you could rent out too. some of them are pet friendly and have fenced in yards for dogs. Rent in this area is pretty reasonable. You can check out the tenant union for listings or Craigslist.

There are also apartment complexes that accept larger dogs, I think Winfield might be one. I'm sure there's more out there!

Hi! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone this fall!

We're looking forward to meeting you to! 🙂

Looking forward to meeting you all in the fall as well!!

For the current students, are professors pretty accessible by office hours or appointments and the like?

Also, out of curiosity, what's everyone doing this summer? It'll be such a weird in-between time!

I will be enjoying my last summer of freedom by going on a road trip to Seattle, Washington with my boyfriend, dog-sitting my grandparent's and uncles dogs for a week while they go to California, volunteering at a wildlife clinic and maybe somewhere else, working a bit, and painting/drawing!

What are your plans?

I have an internship at the hospital at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska which will take the first half of my summer. The remainder I'll be working to save up some cash, and potentially going to England to visit my boyfriend's family. Hopefully I can get a few books read while I still have free brain-time!

Most of the professors are fantastic and really care about students learning and doing well, and they make their office very accessible and their email more so.

My recommendation to you, is take the summer easy. Go on vacation, lay on the beach and sip some Mojitos (if your of age). School will fill your head with enough knowledge (and stress) to last you a life time, no need to pre-game it.

Really cool! I've been to that zoo before. My boyfriend also used to live in England when he was really young. Have fun!

Current Vet Students: Do you remember when the school made / added you to the class facebook page? Was it after the April 15th date?

I'm just wondering because I'm starting to organize my living situation for next year.

Thanks!

It was after the April 15th deadline... I don't know when the page officially goes up, because it can be kinda tricky to find.

Hey all,

Long time reader, first time poster =)

I'm in! Looking forward to meeting you all.

The best way to meet each other is probably via private messaging our Facebook information to each other, right?

The dialogue re: where to live is very helpful, thanks to everyone for the information.

Happy spring!

Hey everyone!

Sent in my official paperwork last week.

I am also planning on living in The Village. I lived alone throughout most of undergrad but I plan on finding a roommate for next year - especially since I don't know many people in the area. I know most will start searching for a roommate once the Facebook page opens up, but if anyone is interested feel free to PM me.

Congratulations to all of you and looking forward to seeing you in the Fall 🙂

Hey everyone. I just signed a lease with another girl for a 4 bedroom town home in the Village. We will have 2 random roommates. I would prefer the randoms to be vet students, so if anyone is looking for vet students to live with, maybe you could live with us!

I was thinking about it!! I wasn't planning on making any living decisions until the end of April (once I graduate and everything is set in stone) but I am interested!

My deposit has been sent and my online status says "Admission Accepted!" So excited to be moving up north again (I'm originally from Minnesota but have been living in Georgia for the past 3 years) and meet everyone. I know most of you are going to be from Illinois, but where else are people coming from?

I've been in school the last 5 years in Miami, FL. So although I'm originally from the Chicagoland area, I'm not exactly looking forward to the winters again..

I guess if you are originally from Chicago it won't be too much of a shocker. The winters here are crazy and unpredictable. We actually have a snow day today due to a blizzard that came through last night and this morning and dropped about a foot of snow. And last winter it was very mild with no snow. It all depends

So our school is currently in a competition for a free ultrasound. If you would like to help out you can VOTE HERE!!

Unlike real elections, every vote counts here!

I plan to be in U-C this weekend to look at apartments/houses. I'd like to secure a good place before they all run out.

PM/email ([email protected]) me if you're interested in collaborating!

Hi everyone! Congratulations on your acceptance.
I am looking for a roommate. I have been thinking about living at The Village with three additional people, however I am open to look for other places. Let me know if your interested!

Hey y'all! I've started looking very briefly at housing options, but I am still very undecided. i am from Florida so it is hard for me to look at different places and i am rather unfamiliar with the area. If anybody is looking for a roomie feel free to message me!

You guys are gonna love it. I'm in the class of 2016 at Illinois, and did my undergrad here as well. It gets stressful and downright hair-pulling-out busy sometimes, but as I end my first year, there's nowhere I'd rather be 🙂

👍 good to know!

I'm also finishing up my undergrad here and I LOVE the school! can't imagine myself anywhere else. it was also nice being able to know and get familiar with the vet school before starting actual vet school.

How do you feel about the curriculum? I'm nervous about how its structured, ie with the Structure & Function I class encompassing 6 classes but only for 1 grade, etc. I don't know if I like the way that is set up, and so far I've heard mixed reviews.

Regardless, looks like I'm mailing in my deposit today! So unless Auburn calls me in the next couple of weeks, I'll be joining you guys at Illinois! Well, technically I'm already here but you know what I mean 🙂

ETA: Do you guys remember which address to mail your admissions acceptance to? Maybe I'm missing something, but it didn't say anything in the letter. Is it just the general College of Veterinary Medicine Office of Academic and Student Affairs address?
