ETA: Do you guys remember which address to mail your admissions acceptance to? Maybe I'm missing something, but it didn't say anything in the letter. Is it just the general College of Veterinary Medicine Office of Academic and Student Affairs address?

I mailed it to the address that was listed on the acceptance letter (I think that was the Office of Academic and Student Affairs.

How do you feel about the curriculum?
Regardless, looks like I'm mailing in my deposit today! So unless Auburn calls me in the next couple of weeks, I'll be joining you guys at Illinois! Well, technically I'm already here but you know what I mean 🙂

👍 I-L-L! fellow Illini 👍

I've heard mostly good things about the curriculum from students. The way I see it is that it's more integrated and 'big picture' kind of teaching/learning (which at least for me is the kind of learning that I prefer). I feel like it might be nice to rotate in and out of clinics more often so you are not just stuck in the same classes for an entire semester. I think the consistent changes would be exciting and keep interest.

good luck with Auburn though. hopefully things will work out as you want them to.

If not, I'm going to see if I can join you guys at WMC again this summer 🙂 I think I'll be happy at either school. I'm just fortunate to have been accepted!

👍 I'm sure you can totally come back to WMC they'd love to have you back! I'm coming back there this summer and now I'm under the 'vet student' category instead of 'undergrad extern' and they want vet student helpers to come in and help during summer. The place is already starting to get super busy and it's only April.

How do you feel about the curriculum? I'm nervous about how its structured, ie with the Structure & Function I class encompassing 6 classes but only for 1 grade, etc. I don't know if I like the way that is set up, and so far I've heard mixed reviews.

Don't be nervous. Yes, you only end up getting one grade at the end of a quarter, but having only two exam weeks beats having 4 exams in each subject and constantly being bombarded with tests.

I hadn't thought about that! Thanks for the info! That does sound much better than an avalanche of tests.

I think I'd also rather have the exam weeks rather than 1 test per week. i feel like it would be easier to keep up with everything at once rather than focus on one subject and then forget everything for the rest

I actually love how the curriculum is set up! Yes, you do have six separate classes and it all equals one grade, but I feel it's so much easier to study then if all the classes were actually separate. What you are learning in one section is similar to another section. Like this quarter we have been studying reproduction. So, in anatomy you are learning the different structures and then you can apply that in physio by learning the application of the structures. The exam weeks take a little getting used to, but eventually you get the hang of things 🙂 It's so much better then having a bunch of exams in one day. I know it seems overwhelming in the beginning, but eventually you get your rhythm going and find something that works for you! Plus we're all here to help out if you need a hand 🙂

Hi all.
I'll see you guys in August! I am an out of state student and loved UIUC at my interview. Very excited to be at this point in my life. I'm sure you all feel the same.

Just out of curiosity where is everyone living next year and have you found any landlords that are pet-friendly?

I'm a little bummed because the apartment that we want to sign for 'allows cats and some small dogs' but said flat out no to having other small animals such as a rabbit because they will 'chew up the furniture and wood'. It's like "hello what do you think a dog or a cat could do?" doesn't make much sense ...

Did you tell them you're a vet student? Sometimes those rules are bent for us because we're "responsible" with animals 😉

That's true we are. Actually my mom happened to be looking at the apartment in person that day while I was in class and asked about them; she told them that I was a vet student too. But I am planning on going back in person myself and negotiating with them. I just hope they are understanding. It's more of a larger company apartment complex rather than a smaller private landlord, I think that the small scale private landlords tend to be more understanding/flexible with their tenants. It's too bad because we really like this place, hopefully something will work out.

Hey adams, i have a friend that lives at the village and has a rabbit. I'm thinking his landlord must know and has approved it. I'm looking into the village as well. I'm pretty sure that half of the C/O 2016 lives out there too. Correct me if I'm wrong 🙂 . I've been looking around for a place that will allow cats, but I'll keep an eye out for places that might allow other furry friends and let you know!

Just got called off the waitlist for u of i and I will be joining you guys in the fall! Cant wait 🙂

Hey! Thanks! we did look there but decided to look at another apartment complex closer to school that also allows cats and small dogs. And yes I think you are right that most of the 2016ers live out there. We didn't sign anything yet so nothing is set in stone still making some final arrangements.

PS you need to stop by the wildlife clinic so that we can catch up!

Some 2016s live there, though many are moving out, due to issues with management. So just heads up.

That's what I heard ... and that's why we decided not to live there. Plus it's far away and close to the railroad tracks.

I live at the village now and I actually don't mind it at all! You get used to the train if you live on the opposite side and it already comes furnished so you don't need to move all that stuff here! Plus you have so many vet students close by if you ever need anything 🙂 Sometimes the management is a little difficult but it's nothing you won't see anywhere else.

okaaayyyyyy, I'm committing my whole heart to Illinois. Time to search for apartments. 😎

Anyone know when we are suppose to get our acceptance packets? Does that include our id number?

Looking for possible roommates for a 3 bedroom home. We have not found the home yet, but I am going up the last weekend in May to look and my mom is very open to purchasing a house. I am not completely sure yet it is going to happen, but wanted to see if anyone was interested. 😉

Depending on the price I would definitely be interested.

Has anyone started looking at registering for classes? I found the website and everything, but how do I know what classes to take? Do we have advisors or anything? I know there aren't that many options, but I would still like to know what classes are the best to take for the first semester. I feel lost. Does anyone have any insight?

I registered for the core classes (601 and 602) but no electives since I was kind of confused on that. I was hoping they might say something on the Facebook page within the next couple of weeks once everyone received their netid.

If you click on the link that says "Elective Opportunities" on the website, it says that the only two options we have for electives as first years are the Zoo Med one and the Public Health one.

Yes I registered for all of the classes on the sheet of 1st year classes. The public health class needs the form sent in for it and since its done by lottery you may not be in it. We need a certain number (8 I think?) of electives to graduate so you don't have to do the offered ones for this semester if neither appeal to you. The full list of electives is located here and you can scroll down and see all of the paths of electives offered. Hope this helps! http://vetmed.illinois.edu/asa/documents/ASAIIVPCElectiveSeriesOverviewAllSpecies2013April11.pdf

I was finally able to register for my classes today (had to wait for them to process my transcript with physics on it). Anyone else taking any electives?

Hollah for zoo med! 😀

Any advice for U of I c/o 2018 applicants??

Dr. Foreman said that one thing they look for in the personal statements is when/how did you make your ADULT decision to become a vet. he said that everyone writes about childhood dreams etc but if you want to stand out I would avoid that.

in their supplemental essay, make sure that you answer the prompt. This past year ours was about the role of vets in food animal medicine. they change it each year. You can draw on your own experiences in vet med to answer this question as well as research it yourself. The main thing they are trying to do is see if you really know and understand the profession.

They really emphasize diverse experience (both vet and animal) as well.

Good luck!

Hi, I did my undergrad at U of I and am pretty familiar with the area. I have not heard of the other places except Capstone Quarters and The Place @ 117. I have not lived at either so I can't give any inside info but Capstone Quarters is all the way in northern Urbana near I-74. It's kind of isolated and is next to One North apartments. The area is a little sketch but the apartments are decent. The Place @ 117 is in Savoy a few miles south of the vet school. Most vet students live out that way.

Hi, thanks for the update, the CC apartments seem very nice on the webpage and honestly couldn't find any reviews online. Found really bad reviews on the place@117 though...
Do you know anything about One north or south apartments?

One North and South are doing major remodeling and renovations. I used to live there. They no longer allow animals however. I wouldn't live there again personally as I was not too fond of the location or management. The Place @ 117 used to be called Indigo Place which are the reviews online. They have since changed management completely and another company bought out Indigo Place and changed the name to The Place @ 117 about a year or so ago. I know a lot of vet students live there and they don't mind it too much. They said that with new management things have really improved.

Hi guys! I was wondering what your thoughts were on joining ISCAVMA? Worth it or no? I'm having trouble making the decision after all the money I've already spent...

On another note, I seriously can't believe it's July and I'll be moving in about a month. It really doesn't feel like any big changes are headed my way, even though they're right around the corner!

All the older vet students I talked to told me that the 4 year membership is definitely worth it because of the opportunities that it comes with. At least that will just be a one time payment for now.

And yes I am excited for school too!
