Hey everyone -

A couple of weeks ago, somebody posted something in here about a planned EM residency program at KUmed (planned to take first class in 2006, i think).

Anyways, I cannot confirm this information and am wondering if there is someone out there that can? I am starting at KU med next year and extremely interested in EM, so this information has stirred quite a bit of interest on my part. Any futhure info would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks,
Dave

I dunno about KU. UMKC is a solid program with some fairly well known faculty though.

KU has been trying to get an EM residency way back when I was going to medschool (92-96). There was talk about having it in Wichita since the KUMC campus on Rainbow Blvd didn't really have the volume or trauma, as compared to Truman Medical Center.

I don't know what's changed in the past 10 years, maybe a lot. But this talk isn't anything new. Actually the doc who tried so hard to start it, John Jeter, is out at Hays Medical Center. I think he may be a CEO now or something like that.

What's up -

For those who care I just talked to a couple people at KU who have confimred that KU will be starting an EM program in Kansas City. The paperwork has been submitted; however, it was submitted late and as such it is not clear whether the program will take it's first class in 2006 or 2007.

KU currently is building a new ED to house the program.

Carry on my wayward sons.

How many hospitals in KS actually use EM DR's? I thought most EM DR's just did the Family thing and then worked in the ER.

I have not received an interview at KU yet but am waiting

Not many ED's outside of KC and Wichita have BC EM physicians. Hopefully this program will help change that.

Anybody have an update on this issue?

Back when I made this post, I emailed the director of emergency medicine at KU and ask about the program. He said that this was indeed going to happen, but that they still weren't sure if it would take it's first class in 2006 or 2007. He also mentioned it will be a pgy 1-3 program.

He did not mention the size of each incoming class or any specifics of how the rotations would be setup or where they would be at (presumably it will be mostly at KU and the KC VA). He also didn't mention anything about organizational structure (IE will EM be it's on department or part of surg or IM).
