They only take about 10-14 out of staters... but it looks like they are looking for people with dental experience. As quoted in the Official Guide to Dental Schools, University of Kentucky states:
"The level of academic performance, difficulty of curriculum followed are of more significance than a simple G.P.A."

they also say:
"A well rounded candidate(with a solid record in academics, extracurricular activites, leadership roles, and other life experiences) tends to be more competitive"

Not too many other schools have written anything like that. Does this mean they are looking for experience and not just numbers?

Because then I might have a chance since I have 3000+ hours of experience.

What do you think? (And please be nice. Its so frustrating to hear the harsh comments some people make)

every school does this. basically theyre sending a message:

if you think you can just study and get good grades and send us an application and wait for acceptance, forget about it. if dentistry is your "safety career choice" then forget about it.

OP,

i think you're reading into it too much. every school is looking for well-rounded applicants.

If you can't handle the heat get outta the kitchen. take the good comments with the bad.

i think they're saying that they want good students that also do "other things really really good". research has shown that the top indicators of success for dental students is GPA plus DAT scores. that's why so many schools have those little equations that they use to determine who to interview. so they look for good scores, and then look for people who will make their communities better once they're out of school. IMO that's what all the schools are saying.
