Anyone have any experience with these programs; interview feedback, overall caliber of program etc.

thanks much,
cndgirl 🙂

U of MD has a superb research program in the neurosciences. I have heard it is a good program for psych. I did not interview there but do know that the residents do get competitive fellowships. If you have an interview there, I would go and ask as many Q's as possible. The only problem may be that it is located in a not-so-great area.

I don't know much about UConn except it does accept quite a number of IMG's.

The research director at U of Maryland also just relocated (2 mos ago) to MCG, he is now the vice chair there to improve the research and help the chair build it up.

I read on an old thread that there was some issue with research funds at MCG a while back - I think thats when they got the new chair.

As for U Conn, they used to be part of IOL but IOL is now separate- and its a new program building up so UConn is now starting over, I met residents that were debating between UConn and IOL, if you have those choices, I'd do IOL>

I wish I could offer more advice but thats all I have.

Hope it helps a bit!

Poety 😳

Maryland is clearly a superior program to U Conn's in all aspects, any way you look at it. Although both cities are ghetto, I personally would rather be in Baltimore than Hartford.

I did think that the PD at Maryland was an arrogant and pompous jerk, when I interviewed there last year. He definitely had an inferiority complex when talking about JHU's program.

UCONN is in farmington and their residents seldom come to Hartford for training. Hartford Hosp. has their own psych. residents via IOL.

Personally, I really like UCONN. It's a very nice program. The PD is not as charming as at other programs I visited but he's very forthcoming and honest. Ther PGYs I met all said they really enjoy working for him as he regards them as assets rather than scutmonkies and one can clearly see this at the morning round on the morning of my interview. The hospital is a little old but it's well-kept. The residents I met were friendly with each other, smart, and appeared very content. The support staff was pleasant too. I really like the circular, spacious design of the inpatient units. Among the program I visited, I rank UConn near the top.

UM- yeah, this program has a better reputation than UCONN but Baltimore is much much more ghetto than farmington or Hartford. Like prominence stated, the PD is pompous and arrogant. I really dislike hearing PDs trashing other programs at interviews. I find it very unprofessional when the R. coordinator, residents, and PD trash yale, harvard, nyu, and such to applicants.

Will be visiting both programs soon.
