The technology and facilities at U of M is absolutely amazing...holy cow.😱

Yup this is why this school is my top choice!! 🙂)

holy crap. that's nice

That is what the sim lab looks like. Every 1st year student is assigned a station with its own mannequin and computer/monitor. But don't make the technology your reason for choosing Maryland. It's nice to have, but definitely make sure you like the school and student culture there as well. The technology only takes you so far, and the biggest criteria for me would be whether or not you feel comfortable there.

I'm happy I went there, and I feel like I received excellent training, but there were also people who weren't so happy during our four years there. Just ask lots of questions to current students and make sure that that is where you want to end up.

Was there a common reason people were unhappy there when you were in school?

Like most dental schools, it is tough to get all of your clinical requirements done by certain deadlines. For Maryland, we had very strict Perio and Pros requirements, and some people struggled with those. I think most people made it out just fine (on time), but there were some people who had a tough time.

Again, like most schools, there is a lot of bureaucracy that you have to deal with to make it through. By design, dental schools are incredibly inefficient, and that can be frustrating to the type A people that generally want to be dentists. It is very difficult to get things done in a timely manner. That was the main frustration with people at our school. But if you just put your head down and work hard, you'll get there. I'm sure you'll find similar complaints from all dental students. If anyone tells you that they loved going to dental school, they are either lying or high. It's a good experience, but every school has its frustrating side.

I just wanted to say that, while the technology is nice, it shouldn't be your primary reason for choosing Maryland. If you are coming from the West coast, understand that the inner city areas of the East coast have a completely different culture and vibe than you might be used to. In my experience, the East coast (Northeast particularly) schools tend to have pretty straight laced faculty, and they are a little more uptight about the little things than people out West. I know that's a generalization, but it was the impression that I had, and it can be frustrating if you are used to a little more relaxed environment.

Again, I would choose Maryland again if I had to do it over again. I felt like my training was excellent, and if you work hard, you will get a lot out of the experience. Just don't be so dazzled by the technology that you make that your only reason for choosing the school. That "wow factor" will wear off after several hundred hours in the lab, and at that point, you need to have other solid reasons for why you want to be there.
