I received an email saying that I didn't have all 6 of my english credits needed to be eligible to apply to UMD. Problem is, I don't. Because of my SAT score, English 101 was waived and I was placed directly into 4 credit Advanced Writing (english 201). I wonder if that will be a problem. It wasn't for my undergrad institution (SUNY at Buffalo) and I already have another interview. Anyone have this happen?

Call the school and explain your situation. They may waive the english credits for you and reconsider your application. Otherwise you can tell them that you will take another english course in the spring to fulfill the requirement.

Do schools just let you come back after graduation, being out for 4 years and getting a masters at a different school..and let you pay for an english course?

Sure they let you come back. The only problem is that you would probably be a non-degree student and it can be hard to get into classes that way. I graduated in 2004 and now I am completing science pre-reqs as a non-degree student, so technically I am not allowed to schedule until about a month before classes begin, in which case most of the classes would be full. However, I convinced the registrar's office to schedule for me early and I have been able to get into each class that I needed. They had no problem with it; they seemed happy to help a graduate of their school.

I took a class at a different college this summer and they even had a post-bac program where I qualified for reduced tuition simply because I already had a bachelor's degree. Summer classes are easier to get into because they don't usually fill up.

I'm sure it all depends on the school. English classes always filled very quickly at my school, so you should get in touch with them now and explain your situation early and hopefully they will help you out. Good luck!

Take one at a community college. They don't care where you take the course from, just take one from anywhere. I would just confirm with the dental school you are going to that the course would filfill their requirement before I'd take it.

are you done with 4 years of undergrad? i thought schools wanted you to complete 6 hours before you enrol, not before you apply. i only have 3 hours of english so far, and even those arent visible on my aadsas transcripts.

I got the same email. One of my classes is an Econ class that's also an upper level writing course at my college which seems to be acceptable for 4 other schools, but maybe not for maryland.

i think this depends on how the school handles their app. process. a lot of schools seem to send out secondaries which ask what courses you are planning on taking to fulfill any unmet requirements, so if you don't list the courses you need to finish then of course they are going to boot you.

but, if you were never sent a secondary to indicate that you are taking x, y and z courses to fulfill the requirements by fall 2008 then how will they know? i don't think there was a place on the aadsas app. to indicate your planned courses 🙄 (yet another problem with aadsas)

i would, like someone else said, call the school and explain your situation, and tell them that you would be more than happy to take another english course to fulfill their requirments (that is if they don't take your situation into account and waive the requirement).

This is the issue... I'm graduated twice over. I have my BS (from SUNY-Buffalo), I have my MS (From VCU) and I've been working for 1.5 years since. There are no expected courses because I've been done with school since May 2004 and finished with undergrad since May 2002. I thought all of this was settled, academically. SUNY-Buffalo thought it was, that's why I graduated. They too require 6 english credits to graduate... Hmmmm? 🙂

Hey SugarNaCl, did you call the schools? Since i don't have a year of classes that are reported through the English department, and that i'll be in Japan for a year (which means i can't come back to take more classes), i may have to withdraw my application from a lot of schools. Only a few of the schools i called say that i'm fine.

You can always take a night course at a local college as a non-degree seeking student to fulfill the requirement if Maryland still insists you take another english course. When I applied I took one additional course at night to fulfill one school's requirement because I had already graduated and was working full time. It was not a big deal. If you decide to do this, talk to the school first to make sure they will reconsider your application with the knowledge that you will in the winter or spring take an additional english course.
