Does anyone have any info on the University of MD/Sheppard Pratt residency? Based on their website, they seem very community oriented. The chair of the program has a particular interest in treating the homeless mentally ill. This program sounds right up my alley, but, of course, the website will only make the program look as good as possible. Anyone have any info, either good or bad, to share about the program?

I interviewed there a week ago so maybe I can give you some of my impressions. Yes, they do like their community psych and have a rich history of doing it. A lot of the research they are proud of involve community psych. However, they also accentuated a lot about psychotherapy and did toot their horn a lot (even more so than another institution in Baltimore) about how swanky Shepherd-Pratt is -- and to be fair, it is a nice building and all.

In PGY-3 year, you can choose a track that's mostly devoted to either staying in the city and doing comm. psych, or going out of the city to Shepherd-Pratt for psychotherapy. They do regard themselves as a balanced program, i.e. doesn't consider themselves to be all "biological" or "analytical". Hope that helps!

hello, i'm one of the interns there. i chose this program because it is in fact a very well-balanced program. on the biological side of things we have the expertise of dr sandson at sheppard pratt. he's very knowledgable on drug-drug interactions. also, your medicine months (im x 3 months, em x 1 month and 2 months neuro) prepare you well for all the potential medical issues that could come up as you progress in your career. meanwhile, your last two years are whatever you make them, inpatient or out-. we have ties with the nih, a psychoanalytic institute, sheppard pratt, state facilities, community programs, really any clinical environment you can think of. if you're independent and know what you want and will go after it, i feel like my program would be great for you. best wishes!

this is the few programs i have seen that has it all. even a psychodynamic inpatient unit and an ED unit.

... and they have all of the accredited fellowships available. Also, the chief resident at my interview day was going to Columbia for forensics fellowship... I dont know much about the forensics world, but that seems to tell me that you can land decent fellowships at other institutions as well.

Sheppard Pratt really is an amazing place... a whole psychiatry campus. Seemed like a great place to train.

I really liked the Program, and there were no weaknesses that I can speak of. I'm thinking about Ranking them high on my ROL, but I haven't heard anything from them. How about anybody else?

I did get a nice call from the PD. But this was very recent and he still might be making calls. I thought it was a great program too!

I hope I get a call too! He had very positive words for me at my exit interview.
