Hi,

I am going into psychiatry and I am very interested in the University of Miami program. Unfortunately, I have heard a couple of faculty say some very bad things about it. Namely, that the chair of the department, Charles Nemeroff, has gotten caught doing some illegal/unethical things and that the program is short on money and possibly considering restructuring hospitals as a result.

Comments, please!?

wow. The Nemeroff scandal was not exactly that long ago. Amazed he somehow landed in a chair position...

This isn't a new move. He's been at Miami at least since 2010 (I interviewed with him then). Interesting dude...

Ok, so Nemeroff is "Ethically Challenged". But how does that affect training for the residents?

Anyone know anything about the possible money problems they might have?

Thanks for all the input!

It's all a matter of context. What are your options? Is Florida the only place you want to live? Then Miami is the better clinical program there. Do you mind going all over the country? Miami cannot compete with the classic all stars of the northeast and west coast.

Nemeroff - while not the model of perfection, has made the program better.

Completely agree with this! Also, @Jetta: sent you a PM that may or may not influence your choice! At least it may answer some of your questions. 🙂

I just interviewed here. If anyone wants to PM me for some thoughts, let me know.

I think Miami would be a great place to practice

The small matter of a crooked rapsheet wouldn't deter me in the slightest. It wouldn't effect at all the training program in and of itself.

Miami itself is the determinant factor. Most of us will have a high degree of influence on where we train. People who want to train in Miami and want the full business of good clinical training at the Jackson Memorial will apply to and rank the program. I'd think it be far more rare to apply the Midwest, for example, and then to the tropical tip of the america's phallic state just to go see what Nemeroff is up to these days.

If the Nemeroff issue is the only one, don't sweat it too much. The attendings on the floors and residents above you are who will be teaching you. You can get a great education at the worst program and a terrible education at the best depending on your willingness (or lack of) to study and work.
