Okay so after surfing U of M's website I am still confused about the following:

The school's dental curriculum--what type of curriculum do they offer(is it Problem-Based?)

Also are there opportunities to volunteer oversees through this school? Externships?

Any info regarding the above or where to find additional info besides the school's site will be greatly appreciated!!

I am not a student there, but I did receive an acceptance from them last cycle so I'll share what I know.

They are not PBL (although I think one student did mention that they did a case or two over their whole career there). Most of the basic sciences are grouped into one huge class called IMS (Integrated Medical Sciences). Instead of taking micro, physio, biochem, they go system by system combining all the disciplines into one while examining the circulatory sys, nervous sys, etc.

They don't have international volunteer opportunities affiliated with the school. Those students who participate in things like that seek them out on their own. You have you whole first summer off and would have plenty of time to do a significant trip within that time. As far as offsite externships go, there is a rotation in the hospital, and then a few weeks (3-4?) in the later years spent at a clinic in some random place in the state.

Do a search around these boards for that info. There is a lot floating around old threads. Try this too: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=5306548&postcount=68

Let's see if I can square you off here

1. NO, it is not a PBL system. You do have to do a couple of cases, I think just so they can say they use pbl. The beauty is they haven't changed the cases in 4 yrs and everyone already knows the answers.
The reply about IMS is true. It is combined much like many medical schools have done. Does it work that well? I couldn't tell you. Rummer has it that it is going away. They are going to brag about how sweet the IMS program is. It's really poorly organized and even though much better than when first implemented, it still sucks.

2. YES, there are overseas oportunities. A couple of programs that are run through the school can end you up in Jamaica and another goes to mostly signts in Africa for cleft lip and palate. There are also mandatory externships in your 4th yr all over the state. They tend to varry and are really well liked by students. Seems that we get alot more real world experience. A couple are in pretty desirable locations and turn into a work/vacation spot for a couple weeks.

3. Adiitional info, can't really say much. The site isn't that great and if you call/visit the school they are just going to fluff you with how awesome they are and how much they make in research. Just PM me or send out some posts, people will eventually respond.
