I wanted to start a thread for U of M. So far I got my PharmCAS verified on 10/8 and I'm sending in my supplemental material on Monday. Hopefully I'm not too late into the game. Has anyone gotten an interview so far?

I had one last week. Went very well, they were very accommodating, nice, and the interview was so easy. Just a conversation. I thought the 2 35min interviews were going to be long, but they went by so quickly. They deferred a decision on my yesterday. They don't decline people after the interview. Just accepted or deferred.

What types of questions do they ask? Also, do you interview with one person at each interview?

Things like "Why Pharmacy", "Why here", "What do you do outside of school". And you interview with 2 people in each group

Do they tell you why they defer you? I just interviewed this past week. Did you hear on Friday? If so, what time did you hear?

I got an email at about 5:30 on Friday. Mark Nelson said that he needed more time and see more applicants before he could make a decision

Do you mind me asking your stats? How do you think you did on the interview?

Mark is a nice guy I met with him recently. How long did you have your supplemental material turned in when they offered an interview?

Cumulative GPA: 3.43
Pre-Req GPA: 3.6
PCAT: 91st percentile

And I thought the interview went excellently. So I was a little disappointed with the decision. But hey, it was a deferral, not a no.

I'm sure you'll get in on second review. Thanks for your help. I'll get my e-mail this Friday probably. I hope to get in right away, but I'm preparing for a deferral.

From what I have heard/reading, Michigan accepts the really elite applications first, then goes back after and puts out acceptances for the second tier ones. This is from what I have heard, no guarantee's it is true

I'm just wondering when you guys received your interview invites. They received my supplemental application on October 7th and my PharmCAS was verified before then. In the email, it said I will hear from them in a 6-8 week timeframe. This is one of my top schools so I'm still nervous even though it has barely been three weeks.
Did it take this amount of time for you all? I didn't apply early decision because my LOR's didn't submit in time for that,if that makes a difference.

My stats are:
3.98 PharmCAS GPA
4.0 Science GPA
97th percentile on the PCAT.

You will hear back soon. I heard back a week after they received it and was told "6-8 weeks" as well. And with your stats, you will get in right away 100%, unless you do horribly during the interview, which won't happen

I got that email from them about 2 weeks before you did and I still haven't heard back 🙁

My supplemental was received on the 22nd of September, and they e-mailed me for my interview on October 13. I'm sure they are now getting a much higher volume of applicants than when I sent my supplemental in, so they probably will take the 6-8 weeks they tell you. I wouldn't worry. At the very least, they'll e-mail you if you don't get an interview, but I'm betting you will.

From what I've also read, I haven't heard of many people saying that they didn't get in after being deferred to December. I also don't know if they would want to post that. I'm wondering if our chances are higher though for applying this early. Any thoughts?

You would think that chances would be higher because there are more spots not filled. But who know's how acceptances really work. I am just curious as to how long of a wait it will likely be after a deferral to hear back

I've read about people hearing as soon as November and others hearing in December when they tell us we will hear.

I got the email confirming they received my supplemental material. Hopefully it doesn't take 6-8 weeks but they probably have a lot of stuff to go through.

does anyone know how expensive it would cost to live in Michigan?

Also, if you go to Michigan for pharmacy, they will strongly suggest you to have your own car to get to your clinical settings because they could be 60 miles or more away, and carpooling isn't a real option (according to Mark Nelson)

I got in today! So, if anyone has any questions about what happens after you get in, I'll be glad to answer them as the information comes in to me. So happy to be a Wolverine!

Congrats!!

How early did you submit your supplemental app and how much later did you hear back from them?

Also do you mind sharing your stats? And will you have your bachelors prior to matriculation?

And one question that it specific to me I guess since I got into Wayne. Did you apply to WSU? If so, did you get accepted? What made you choose UM over WSU? I was very impressed with WSU at my interview and I wonder what it is about UM that made you choose it.

Thank you! I submited my supplemental on September 22nd, and I heard back that I got an interview on October 13 for an interview on October 23rd.

I will have a BS in Human Physiology prior to matriculation. My cumGPA is 3.18, and my prereqGPA is 3.05. I was very surprised and excited that I got in, and I think what really helped me was my diverse experiences. I've worked as a Resident Assistant, an Orientation Leader, Peer mentor for two organizations, shadowed in both a hospital and a community pharmacy, and come from a diverse background as well.

I didn't apply to Wayne. I was trying to stay within BIG10 as I am doing my undergrad at Iowa. Honestly, Michigan is consistently in the top 7 of rankings, has a small class size, and provides INCREDIBLE opportunities, so that's why I chose them.

I got into Wayne and Michigan. As good of a day the interview was at Michigan, I was much more impressed by Wayne, which is why I will be going there. Everyone seemed happier, and I really loved the pharm building at WSU. Also, Wayne is clinical focused, whereas Michigan is research orientated. I really don't want to do research, but want to work at a community pharmacy, so that was another deciding factor.

Is everyone who is applying on here have a bachelors? I'm afraid because I don't it will hurt my chances even though they say it doesn't. I would not hesitate to work on a degree in the summer before and after P1 because I don't have a lot of classes to take to get a Bio or Chem degree.

You heard back from your deferral already! That's incredible! Too bad we won't be classmates this upcoming year!

Honestly, as long as you're a strong applicant, they won't care if you have a bachelor's degree or not. They just let in more people who have Bachelor's because they are typically stronger applicants and have taken more upper-level courses than someone without one.

Kudos to you. I'm worried because I submitted my supplemental application 2 days after you did, have similar grades, a high score on the PCAT, have a bachelor and a master degree, plenty of research experience and plenty of shadowing experience as well as clinical experience and years of community service yet I haven't been contacted yet 🙁🙁

Would it be bad to contact them asking them when I expect to hear back? Technically it hasn't been 6-8 weeks yet -- though it will be 6 weeks at the end of this week. The thing is that I've interviewed at 2 other schools and got in immediately and UM is my #1 school of choice. :lame:

I'm also really nervous! I submitted my application about a week or so after and U of M is one of my top choice schools. Waiting for interviews is so stressful. I am so worried and neurotically checking my email haha

Congratulations to getting accepted to two other schools, though!

Thank you. I just called them and they said that my application was on "hold" -- that kind of made me nervous because it sounded like it was a bad thing -- but they said that I should hear back later this week. It probably just meant that they are just going through applications. It must have been a very busy cycle for them.

I emailed Mark today and he said my application was on hold.. 🙁 I don't know if that means I wont get an interview at all or if I will get one after the better apps get interviews.

Yeah I got the same thing. I am disappointed because I got an interview at Wayne at the very earliest date and was informally accepted during my interview. This is a big let down from Michigan.

Well at least you have one acceptance so you're defiantly going to pharmacy school! I have my interview with wayne on monday so fingers crossed!

My application was also put on hold. Is there a certain reason that some are put on hold, or is it just due to the sheer volume of applications they receive? Does anyone know? This is a letdown for me as well. In the email, they said we should know by the first week of January. By that point, I will have finished at least three interviews and might already have had to put down a deposit for other schools..

The email says that they have way too many qualified applicants, so I guess so. I'm in the same boat as you. I just turned down the Ferris interview, but if I didn't then I would have had three interviews as well by that deadline. I guess I'm going to have to pay the Wayne deposit if not 100% decide to go there and forget about UM entirely. I'm just split right now between the two schools, but due to the way UM has handled my application so far I'm not sure that it will be this even anymore.

What I'm kind of upset about is that I know two people that submitted their applications 2-3 days after mine and have already had their interviews and decisions already.

I know how you feel. I have pretty good stats too, so I'm not sure why I was put on hold. People who submitted after you already got decisions?! That is completely unfair. I have no idea how they're approaching this application cycle but it's really making me turn away from attending their school or even consider it, when it was one of my top two. It's kind of frustrating because they said that I would have a decision in 4-6 weeks. It has been that long, and then they tell me that they are going to put my application on hold and I will have an answer by January 1st..? I wish they would have told me that being put on hold was a likely possibility from the get go so I wouldn't have been anticipating an interview invite or lack thereof.

Stop crying. If they were actually impressed by your application you would already be in. The fact that you are put on hold simply means they are waiting for better applicants. It doesn't matter what your stats are there is something about you they that don't care for

Okay, rude. You can kindly leave now. This is a forum of support, not ridicule.

Who said anything about crying? I agree with the previous post. This site is for people to help each other through the pharmacy process, not to berate others in a holier-than-thou demeanor.

That was uncalled for. Yes, I realize that my sats are not the most perfect but I still believe I have something to offer. Honestly, we don't need your negativity.

Thanks for your input.

You are probably right; having a PCAT in the top tenth percentile, a bachelors and a masters, four years of research with two publications, eight years of clinical experience, an extensive list of community service, a variety of pharmacy shadowing experiences, and three exceptional LORs do not impress anyone.

It is because of my lack of credentials that they are still sifting through applicants that did not care enough about this College of Pharmacy to apply early. It is certainly not because they have had too many applicants, because they are internationally-known, and they send out this routine generic email out to all of their qualified applicants as a courtesy.
:eyebrow:
(Thanks for making me type all of that)
