Hello!
I was wondering if anyone had experience with U of M's electronic med record. I believe it's called "Careweb" (?). I will be doing my fellowship there next year and wanted to hear more specifics about the system. I'm coming from a completely paperless institution (using EPIC) and was wondering how difficult the transition will be (heheh). Are the notes in the system or is it still paper, etc?
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!

I did a sub-I there during my fourth year of med school last year. Although all the results (lab, radiology, path, etc) are on the computer and it is possible to write notes on the computer, a lot of progress/clinic notes are still handwritten. All the bedside vitals are paper-based as I recall. Orders are handwritten in the chart as well. They have a lot of great online educational resources though.

Not sure what your fellowship will be in and if you'll deal with anything surgical, but I can say that their anesthesia record keeping is real-time computer based and is amazing.

Good luck. Ann Arbor is a fun time. Enjoy it!

CareWeb rocks! I miss it! I went to med school at Michigan. All H&P's, progress notes on the medical services are on the computer. Notes date back to the mid 1990's. Labs, radiology are on the computer and the system is easy to use and find what you want. Some of the surgeons still write paper progress notes. When I was there, orders were still on paper, but there was talk of switching to computerized order entry.

I love Careweb - it's really awesome. Everything is online, all notes, labs, biopsy results, radiology reports, all rads images from CTs to echos to MRIs, EKG's, caths, echo reports, anesthesia records, ED records, clinic notes, consults, EEGs, nutrition notes, upcoming appointments, growth trends, immunizations, medication records, inpatient and outpatient meds, DPOAs, etc. All official notes - progress, consults, inpt, H&P, etc are entered in the system (not sure exactly what the other poster was talking about regarding the progress note writing - all progress notes are typed up and are accessible on careweb. Sometimes surgery used to write in notes by hand on the pt chart as well, but that's not strictly needed)...or you can dictate them and they're uploaded to Careweb by the next day. It's very easy to use and organized. There are tons of computers everywhere to use as well.

Orders are now entered in online as well on several services (OB, Peds) and the system (Carelink) is rolling out to IM subspecialities as well. Otherwise orders are written on patient charts. Vitals are recorded and kept in pull-out drawer things by the patient rooms. On OB, however, vitals are kept in the computer as well.

Careweb is one of my favorite things about the hospital. You'll love it if you come from a paper-based system or otherwise.

gawd i miss careweb.

Wow!

Thanks for all the great responses! I was super excited before - and this is just icing ^_^

Can Careweb be accessed remotely ie: from home? I've appreciated that feature when I've had my clinic patients call me after-hours, etc.
Thanks, again!

yes, you can check careweb at home. checking labs at home is addictive. just leave it at work.

plus, another thing i miss about michigan is the pager forwarding system. we don't have that here. you call this number to sign your pager out to whomever you're signing out to at night, and anyone who pages you automatically gets routed to the right person.

things that weren't great about michigan:
1. not enough parking
2. too darn cold. freezing nose hairs. ice block in the bottom of the clogs.
3. although it's the midwest and people are friendly, sometimes people can be a little intense
4. fatties

I did my 3 year PM&R residency at UM and used Careweb all that time. It is awesome, I loved it. Made life so much better. Checked it from home all the time.

We had home call so if I got a page I could check labs, imaging, and WRITE ORDERS all from my BED!

The people are only intense in the hospital, and the hospital employees are NOT representative of the people of Ann Arbor, who are very laid back in general. Please, do not think UM hospital empoyees represent Ann Arbor...not by a long shot.

Yes, plenty of fatties.
