This program looks interesting. Does anyone have some personal experience with the program? I am interested in staying in the mid-west and this is one of the programs I'm thinking of adding to my list of places to apply to.

I have heard some good things about the program, but it is definitely overshadowed by Mayo. However the training at UMN looks solid.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has any current experience with UMN that they can comment on? Competitiveness of the program? Lifestyle during residency? I am also interested in staying in the Midwest. Thanks!

As a medical student at the U of M interested in Neurology, I found the program inviting, down to earth, and resident oriented. You split time between 3 hospitals with very distinctly different patient populations. HCMC is the "inner city" county hospital with some very interesting pathology, especially from recent immigrants. The UMN hospital has a good mix of patients, but gets some zebras and has a some strong interventional faculty. The VA is its own beast, but a wonderful group of patients with lots of TBI, PTSD and alcoholism. The faculty are great. Very focused on teaching. The former chair who just stepped down so he could get back to clinical work and teaching (Dr. Anderson) just won this years AAN A. Baker award. I would have strongly considered staying if my wife could stand the MN winters. Definitely worth checking out.
