How does one answer the "What is your Native language" question?
does that question only pertain those are not US citizens? It comes right after citizenship question
Are they asking what is your 1st language?
It seems the definition of native language/mother tongue is all over the place.
I seen what language are you most proficient in. What you 1st learned as a child. What is the language of where you were born. What speak @ home. etc.
I'm born here, read/write/speak english perfectly well but being a non American family, I didn't learn to speak English 1st until preschool, there was sesame street but I doubt it really counts.
I'm proficient in both English and Vietnamese. I only speak Vietnamese @ home because my mom won't understand me too well if you just speak English.
Yet I have NEVER been asked or suggested I take the TOEFL exam for undergrad admission or when I applied to law school. I remember being put in ESL classes in grade school. But that was the early 80s and school I went to put nearly every student of south east asian decent in esl regardless.
It seems if I fill in Vietnamese as my native language/mother tongue I have to take it.
Maybe I'm making this out to be more than it really is. Simply putting both English and Vietnamese would just solve things. i'm kinda pissed I miss read the supplement info guide and didn't notice minnesota needed one.
I'm awaiting a reply the school but figured maybe someone has run into this question.
