Can anyone tell me if the MD/Phd program at MU is funded for the duration of time spent in the program? Do you get paid the entire time or just during the research portion of the program, thanks.

mizzou is not MSTP, and as far as i remember, there is no actual md/phd program. although there are people who have done md/phd there, if you want to do it you have to basically design your own curriculum. i would have thought that it is fully funded with the drop-out clause, but you should call and check for yourself.

hey iatros-

i'm a student at mu right now and am currently applying for the med school. the pi i've been with for two years really wants me to do an md/phd with him, and he was explaining the program to me. from what he said and from what i've heard, here's how it works:

-it's not mstp so you will apply for a "life sciences fellowship," which gives you a stipend and covers phd expenses.
-md expenses unfortunately are a bit more complicated. they are either covered by your pi or by you, as far as i know. in rare cases there might be a scholarship offered by the school, but i haven't heard of this happening too much.
-the curriculum is basically up to you, but it's recommended that you rotate prior to ms1 and during the early part of ms1, then finish ms1 and ms2 , then do your research, and then go back and finish up ms3 and ms4. my situation is a bit different, and if i choose to stay for this program, i'll prolly do do my thesis research before i do ms1, then finish med school in four sequential years.
-i'm pretty sure md coursework counts for the phd, but the reverse is not true. for the additional phd coursework, you'd most likely squeeze that in during ms1, ms2, and phd-year 1
-no idea how many people are in the program, but there are one or two in my department, some in biochemistry, and some in physiology (i think).

some final notes. dean crist and the faculty are really pushing for a more research-oriented school, so it wouldn't surprise me if in the next several years we have mstp funding. it just hasn't happened yet.

i hope my rambling makes sense, but if it doesn't my excuse is that i've been sick all weekend. 😉 if you have any questions or need the names of some people to contact at the school, just let me know.

To get MSTP funding the school will need to have a fairly sizeable, fully-funded (by the school or private funds) MD/PhD program for years before even being considered. Further, it's extremely rare these days for a school to be given MSTP funding on the first try.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but I highly recommend not going to a program that does not have full funding. Competing for grants to pay for your school is not what you need to be spending your time doing. The PhD dropout rate at these programs are much, much higher for a number of reasons.
